    2. The history of transportation has been amazing! We little humans and our brains keep coming up with more efficient ways to move people and goods everywhere. Unfortunately the most fabulous solutions are temporary and end up causing huge problems. An endless cycle of PROBLEM - SOLUTION PROBLEM SOLUTION .The history of transportation has been amazing! 3. In prehistoric times early humans had to use their feet for transportation and their arms to carry things. Once they figured out how to tame horses to ride and to pull carts the vistas expanded greatly. 5. American cities were drowning in unpleasant byproducts of the eras predominant mode of transportation: congestion, horse manure, horse carcasses, flies, disease, and traffic accidents. The situation seemed dire. A public health and sanitation crisis of almost unimaginable dimensions loomed. And no possible solution could be devised.American cities were drowning in unpleasant byproducts of the eras predominant mode of transportation: congestion, horse manure, horse carcasses, flies, disease, and traffic accidents. 6. IN 1898, delegates from across the globe gathered in New York City for the worlds first INTERNATIONAL URBAN PLANNING CONFERENCE. One topic dominated the discussion. The delegates were driven to desperation by horse manure. Horses were absolutely essential for the functioning of the nineteenth century cityfor personal transportation, freight haulage, and even mechanical power. Unfortunately, Stumped by the crisis, the urban planning conference declared its work fruitless and GAVE UP in three days instead of the scheduled ten. ==> Doug, They gave up !! How did they solve the PROBLEM !! ==> Greg, What they didnt realize was right over the horizon was a SOLUTION !! 7. It was a Solution they couldnt see ! Little did Henry Ford know at the time, but his invention was the solution to all the horse PROBLEMS of the era.It was a Solution they couldnt see ! 8. PROBLEM: Just like the HORSE, the SOLUTION has become a PROBLEM !! Little did the world know that the rickety model T Ford would be so successful that it would change the habits of the world population and in turn become a huge PROBLEM in the far off future.PROBLEM: Just like the HORSE, the SOLUTION has become a PROBLEM !! 9. IF --- we continue to rely on CARS, the Future appears Bleak!! CONGESTION: Well need 20 lane highways by 2020. AND as with the horse, increased congestion & pollution becomes inevitable. POLLUTION: Lots of it. ACCIDENTS: 40,000 deaths / year in the USA ==> Doug, do you have any idea how we could solve these problems? IF --- we continue to rely on CARS, the Future appears Bleak!! 10. =? Greg, Unfortunately most people think clean tech Automobiles are going to solve the auto problem. Unfortunately, super clean cars solves only one important aspect of the success of the automobile. POLUTION Again, if we continue to rely on CARS, the Future appears Bleak!! ==> Doug, do you have any idea how we could solve all 3 of these problems ?=? 11. ==> Greg - Public Transit solves all three! ==>So Doug, we solved the Congestion, Pollution, and the Accidents !! IS THERE any problem with this solution ? ? Greg, there are two main reasons that rail and buses are not successful. #1 - All these forms are hugely expensive which results in: A. All rides are highly subsidized by other taxpayers. B. In fact, transit departments brag when fares bring in as much as 1/4 of their annual operating costs. C. They ignore the original capital costs and never even consider the huge paybacks involved something a real businessman can never ignore for a second! D. Finally these huge costs limit how many miles can be installed, WHICH cause the second main problem ==> Greg - Public Transit solves all three! ==>So Doug, we solved the Congestion, Pollution, and the Accidents !! 12. #1 - They are tedious to use Intermodal or multimodal travel is required. Transfers and waiting for scheduled departures. #2 - Being group travel these vehicles must STOP and START many times. Once they depart, even though they can cruise at 100 km/hr their resulting average speed is down in the 25-30 Km/Hr range. This is simply an unacceptable inconvenience to people which requires sacrifice. CARS that take people very close to where they desire to travel and leave exactly WHEN they want to go are far superior in the minds of the people - in spite of the Congestion, Pollution, and the Safety problems. #1 - They are tedious to use Intermodal or multimodal travel is required. 13. ==>Greg ? So Hybrid, PHEV, EV dont solve the problems? ? Public transit does, but people dont use it. ? So Doug, What does the solution need to have ?? Greg, It needs to be: DIRECT, ON-DEMAND, & FAST so PEOPLE WILL WANT TO USE IT. and AFFORDABLE so we can DEPLOY it on a WIDE SCALE ==>Greg - Doug - What you just described sounds like the perfect automobile? ==> Doug - Yes Greg, Imagine you own a Ferrari that only costs $10,000 and that you can legally drive at speeds up to 240km/hr. You also own all the roads. There are NO other cars nor are their any red lights - only green lights Wouldnt that be nice !! ? First, lets not give up like the Urban Planners did in 1898 !! 16. SkyTran is based on a highly-interconnected network, so there are many alternate paths between home and work. Like Express Highways you ride DIRECT Non-STOP in a personal vehicle traveling on a guideway lane that takes you ANYWHERE in the network. 18. Ill give you an example of the importance of On-DEMAND: Consider just how FAST is the worlds fastest Train - the 430 km/hr Shanghai MagLev? It departs every 15 minutes. If you just miss a train and have to wait a full 15 minutes your AVERAGE speed for the 30 km trip is now just 80 Km/hr !
