Visual Arts • Performance Task K-1 • Standards • VA1: Media, Techniques and Processes: The student demonstrates understanding and can apply media, techniques and processes. • VA1b: The student experiments with materials, media, technology, techniques and processes as a means of expressing visual ideas. • VA3: Subject Matter, Symbols and Ideas: The student chooses and evaluates a range of subject matter, symbols and ideas. • VA3d: The student recognizes purpose and uses themes, styles and subject matter in artwork. Performance Task Your class is making a big book about the four seasons and how changes happen in nature. After using several different kinds of materials and kinds of ways to show what seasons look like, you will create an artwork based on one season. You will: 1. Look at and talk about works of art that show seasons using a variety of techniques, media, and themes. 2. Choose a variety of materials and experiment with them to make works of art about the seasons. 3. Meet with your teacher and share your artworks, talking about the kind of materials you best like to use. 4. Make a work of art showing a particular season using your favorite materials. 5. Talk about and share your final artwork with your classmates. 6. Give your teacher your final artwork as well as the rest of your artworks (portfolio).

Circumstances of Performance The student work is produced under the following conditions : • Criteria for Success • Shows evidence of experimentation with at least three of the following: materials, media, technology, techniques and processes as a means of expressing visual ideas. (VA1b) • Expresses the specific theme of seasons through the use of selected media, techniques, etc. (VA3d) • Related Standards • VA2: Structures and Functions: The student demonstrates knowledge of structures and functions. • VA2c: The student interprets the expression of ideas, moods and feelings in art forms. • VA3: Subject Matter, Symbols and Ideas: The student chooses and evaluates a range of subject matter, symbols and ideas. • VA3c: The student identifies themes found in works of art.

Student Work # 1Evidence of Criteria for Success • Evidence ofexperimentation with materials: • The student experiments with crayon, torn construction paper, colored pencil, and glue. • Evidence of techniques: • The student uses a torn paper collage technique. • Evidence of processes: • The student creates ground covering with the use of colored pencils, houses with crayons, and a summer tree collage. • Evidence of theme: • The student depicts seasonal theme as a tree in summer. • VA1b: The student experiments with materials, media, technology, techniques and processes as a means of expressing visual ideas. • VA3d: The student recognizes purpose and uses themes, styles and subject matter in artwork.

  9. Student Work # 1 Commentaries on Criteria for Success • In the student’s portfolio it is evident that standard VA1b was successfully met. The student shows evidence of experimentation with at least three of the following: materials, media, technology, techniques and processes • as a means of expressing visual ideas. • Materials: sponges, brushes, drawing paper, construction paper, glue, and colored pencils. • Media: tempera paint, water color, crayon, and pastels. • Techniques: collage, free-hand drawing, sponge painting, leaf printing, large brush strokes, and small brush strokes. • Processes: sponge painting, brush strokes, printing, torn paper collage, free-hand drawing, and mixed media painting. • The portfolio of artwork shows seasonal themes and the applications of varied media, techniques and processes; therefore, evidence exists that the student meets the standard VA3d.

Implications for Teaching and Learning • How can this student work and the teacher commentaries be used as a tool to improve teaching? • The work depicts how students are assessed by comparing artwork to the standard. • The on-going assessment informs instruction and provides feedback to students on what can be revised or refined. • The series of seasonal lessons exemplifies thematic teaching. • What is the value of using this performance task to assess student learning? • The performance task shows a systematic format for sequential learning patterns. • The performance task allows the students to explore, make choices, and evaluate a range of materials and techniques.
