  1. Republic of IraqMinistry of Industry & MineralsState Company for Mining Industries and Aquatic Insulation IRAQ MINING 2011 7-8/9/2011 1

  2. INTRODUCTION • The state company for Mining Industries and Aquatic Insulation has performed, as a basic part of its work, the scientific researches in the field of mining to prepare metals from the metallic ores available in Iraq. 2

  3. INTRODUCTION • The exploitation of ores holding oxides is considered as a main target of the company targets. The most important of that ores are hematite and quartz available in the western area of Iraq. • The company efforts in the field of researches has continued for the purpose of producing Iron and silicon from its ores. 3

  4. Research & Development • The company achieved many research projects in the field of mining, some of these researches have been transferred to a pilot plant level:- 1. A research of preparing iron oxide from hematite ore which is available in Husainiyat area in Anbar city by using chemical method. The research was transferred to a pilot plant. 2. A research of preparing salt solutions used in petroleum wells from the salt water in Fao saltern in Basrah city. 4

  5. Research & Development 3. A research of preparing dead burned Magnesia from bitter water in Fao saltern in Basrah city . The research was transferred to a pilot plant. 4. A research on pilot plant level to prepare of Calcium Carbide from carbonate deposits which is available in the middle and north of Iraq by using electric arc furnace technology. 5

  6. Research & Development 5. A research on pilot plant level to prepare silicon metal and ferrosilicon alloy from high purity quartz sands which is available in Anbar city by using electric arc furnace technology. 6. A research on pilot plant level to prepare flake aluminum powder from aluminum scrap by using air atomization and grinding technology. 7. A research for the preparation of sulfur for agricultural purposes. 6

  7. Projects of Company • Many researches have been transferred to a production plants and the efforts are continued to transfer the others as follows:- 1. researches have been transferred to a production plants: * A plant for producing calcium carbide with a capacity of (300 ton/year). * A plant for producing flake aluminum powder with a capacity of (25 ton/year). 7

  8. Projects of Company * A plant for producing agricultural sulfur with a capacity of (100 ton/year). *A plant for producing salty solutions for petroleum wells with a capacity of (300 cubic meter/year). 8

  9. Projects of Company 2. researches need technical assistances and investment to transfer them to a production plants: • Plant for producing flake aluminum powder needs to a technical assistances and investment to reach an estimated production capacity of (750 ton/year) to meet the local demands. • * The establishment of a plant for producing silicon and ferrosilicon alloy needs to a technical assistances and investment to reach an estimated production capacity of (25000 ton/year). 9

  10. Projects of Company * The completion of the project for producing dead burned magnesia needs a technical assistances and investment for producing of (2000 ton/year). 10

  11. Investment of High Purity Quartz Sands in Establishing Silicon Metal and Ferrosilicon alloy Plant11

  12. Silicon and Ferrosilicon Plant The research of preparing silicon metal and ferrosilicon alloy from quartz sands has resulted a technical and economical indications that encouraged us to go ahead to establish a production plant to meet the country needs and export abroad. 12

  13. Silicon and Ferrosilicon Plant INDICATIONS - The high purity of quartz sands about 98%. - The reserves of quartz sands is more than 850 million ton . - The availability & variety of Iron sources like iron turning and iron ore. 13

  14. Silicon and Ferrosilicon Plant INDICATIONS - The availability of coal and other sources of carbon. - Low prices of raw materials is used in this industry. - There is a local need to the silicon metal and ferrosilicon alloy. 14

  15. RESULT OF RESEARCHS Results of Silicon Metal Preparation Research

  16. RESULT OF RESEARCHS Results of ferrosilicon preparation Research

  17. Silicon and Ferrosilicon Plant Project Objectives • The plant aims to produce the two types of ferrosilicon alloys (75% Si) and (45% Si) with an estimated production capacity (25000 ton/year) according to ASTM 100-80. • The plant aims to produce the metallurgical silicon about 98% purity. • The proposed site for the plant is in Anbar city. 17

  18. Silicon and Ferrosilicon Plant Uses of Ferrosilicon • Ferrosilicon alloys are used in producing raw steel and alloyed steel in particular, the steel used in the transformer cores and electrical motors with the magnetic properties. • Ferrosilicon alloys has an important role in balancing of the metallic phases in molten steel and in the dispersion and reduction of the size of graphite in the produced steel. 18

  19. Silicon & Ferrosilicon Plant Uses of Silicon metal • Silicon is used in producing Non-Ferrous metal alloys like ferrosilicon, ferromanganese, and Al-Si alloys which represents 55% of world consumption. • Silicon is used in producing silicones, silicon oils and silicon resin which represents 40% of world consumption. • Silicon of Ultra high purity is used in generating the electrical energy in solar cells. • Silicon of high purity is used in electronic industry. 19

  20. Silicon & Ferrosilicon Plant Summary of Feasibility Study
