What is OSS? • OSS means Open Source Software • OSS is created & maintained by developers crossing institutional & national boundaries • Products are typically a certain kind of “free” • Successful applications tend to be developed more quickly because they are free • Quality more important than Profit • Intellectual property rights belong to everyone Source: http://oss4lib.org/node/495

  5. Why Firefox? • Tab browsing • Addition of “tool bars” • EBSCO search • Add-ons for websites • Can have “fun” with work • Customization!

  6. Why Mozilla? • Sister product of Firefox with similar features (add-ons, etc) • Easy all in one • Browser • Email • Web page composer • Chat • Free

  7. Why Gimp? • Professional image software is very expensive • Lots of nice functionality • Low learning curve • Free

  8. Why Tux Paint? • Fun and easy for kids of all ages • Teaches hand-eye coordination • Penguins are cute • Introduces early principles of OSS • Can use in various languages • Free

  9. Why OpenOffice • Writer = Word • Draw = Parts of Word & Power Point • Calc = Excel • Math = Parts of Word, Excel, Power Point • Impress = Power Point • Base = Access

  10. Filezilla • Easy to use • Free

  11. Why an OSS catalog? • Support • Use features developed by others • Complete customization • No buy-outs or merges • Works on various platforms • Pride • Free or minimal cost

  12. Things to think about • Some OSS requires higher level tech skills • Patches • Selling end users on the idea • Not guaranteed tech support
