Greenfield High School Massachusetts History and Social Science Curriculum Framework April 2019

Chapter 296 of the Acts of 2018 AN ACT TO PROMOTE AND ENHANCE CIVIC ENGAGEMENT The primary purpose of a history and social science education is to prepare students to have the knowledge and skills to become thoughtful and active participants in a democratic society and a complex world. DESE Timeline • 2018-2019 is a planning year, particularly with emphasis on deepening educators’ understanding of the new Framework and developing district implementation plans. • GHS history teachers have attended the PD on new history curriculum alignment as well as community project based planning • Implementation of Civics course expected to begin in Grade 8 in 2019-20 • Realignment of high school history courses along with newly formed electives to further engage civic learning to begin in 2020-21

GHS Priority 1: Emphasis on Civics Education in Grade 8 • New, full-year civics course, grade 8 being offered 2019-20 • Civics standards more intensely integrated into every grade will follow in 2020-21 • Revised high school U.S. Government and Politics; adjusting offered electives in the 2020-21 school year • DESE would like a further emphasis on: -“A Renewed Mission: Education for Civic Life in a Democracy” -Guiding Principles,e.g., legacy of democratic government, diverse perspectives on historical and current events, data analysis, and media literacy -Standards for history and Social Science Practice, Pre-K-12 redesigned Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education

U.S. History and Social Science • Foundations of U.S. Political System • Development of U.S. Government • Rights and Responsibilities of citizens • The Constitution, Amendments, and Supreme Court decisions • The Structure of Massachusetts state and local government • Freedom of the press and news/media literacy World History • The emergence and expansion of Islam to 1500, the growth and decline of Islamic Empires • The Medieval period in Europe to 1500 Renaissance and the Reformation in Europe, Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment in Europe • Indian history to 1800 • History of China and Japan to 1800 • The civilizations of Central America

Civics Engagement Project 8th grade implementation 2019-20 GOALS: • Continue to use local history to enrich social studies learning and expand engagement of students with the history in their own backyard. • Continue to teach students to practice historical thinking • Continue to build relationships with community partners • Continue to use technology to reach a wider audience for student work and education practice.

Possible Projects • Explore extending partnerships with the Greenfield Community -historical commission -Greenfield Library -possible town offices • Continue to work with the historical commission and work on a historic district -kiosks at historical locations -brochure on historical sites or map/poster project -study of local historical architecture and include in kiosks -possible blog submission or website of student research -collaborate with GMS students on a project • Continue to expand research on town history -Connecting local history to U.S. history -Exploration of history and present function of local civic buildings -Neighborhood study - changes in architecture, building use and people who live(d) there -Why do people come to and settle in Greenfield?...historically and today? -Collection of primary source material related to local history and government
