  1. Thesis Statement Practice Synthesis Prep 1

  2. What are the ACTUAL directions for writing? • Synthesize information from at least three of the sources and incorporate it into a coherent, well-developed essay that identifies the key issues associated with the locavore movement and examines their implications for the community. 2

  3. Thesis Statements that Defend • The locavore movement will be the stride towards healthy and economical communities, while finally emphasizing importance in the awareness of quality consumption. • Positives: • Supports without simply saying “I agree” • Narrows the topic • Sticks to the topic- “examines implications for the community” 3

  4. Thesis Statements that Defend • The fact that many worldwide products may be contaminated with disease and such, the better option economically as well as health wise would be to purchase food produced locally. • What can be improved here? 4

  5. Thesis Statements that Defend • Supporting the locavore movement will benefit the community and by participating will also help out the environment and the whole world. • What can be improved? 5

  6. Defend • The number of locavores, or people who have decided to eat locally grown or produced products as much as possible, has been increasing over the past decade, much because they feel that these foods can better the community’s economy, health, and environment. • What needs to be improved? 6

  7. Thesis Statements that Refute • Locavores serve a good cause and have many good motives for healthy living; however it is far too inconvenient and unnecessary to only eat locally grown foods and produced products. It would merely be a waste of time and money because the same foods can be found at supermarkets in much better locations and for better prices. • Positives: • Addresses implications for community • Narrows the topic into arguable parts • Why is this thesis not classified as a qualification? 7

  8. Refute • The impractical locavore movement is an attempt to sabotage economies that are driven by selling their produce to other parts of the world and is making the necessity of food inconvenient to the average American. • Positives: • Well-worded • Clear side taken • Specific, narrow argument created 8

  9. Refute • A locavore movement would restrict the food options severely. • What needs to be improved? 9

  10. Qualifying Arguments • Although locavore idealism would greatly benefit a community through providing an improved local economy, fresher food choices, and the refinement of classic American culture, the transition to a locavore lifestyle would prove to be a difficult task unless wholly supported by the community. • Positives: • Successfully qualifies the argument • Narrows the focus to specific elements without merely listing the reasons in thesis • Keeps argument open enough to use many sources that show benefits and difficulty in transitioning 10

  11. Qualifying Arguments • The locavore lifestyle is a healthy alternative to supermarkets, but only under very specific circumstances. • What can be improved? 11

  12. Qualifying Arguments • Even though being a locavore and the convenience of supermarkets have pros and cons, the circumstance in which people live in really influence people’s choice of lifestyle. • What can be improved? 12

  13. Qualifying Arguments • Taking part in the locavore movement provides economic, nutritional, and environmental advantages for all individuals of an area, the degree of which depends on the distance from said source. • What can be improved? 13
