  1. Objectives: Use direct and inverse variation Direct and Inverse Variation

  2. Variation • Direct variation: y varies directly with x • Inverse variation: y varies inversely with x • The number is the constant of variation

  3. EX: Solve the variation problem • 1. If y varies directly with x and y = 8 when x = 2. Find y when x = 20 • 2. If y varies directly with x and y = 3 when x = 27. Find y when x = 72

  4. EX: Solve the variation problem • 3. If y varies inversely with x and y = 10 when x = 2. Find y when x = 55 • 4. If y varies inversely with x and . Find y when x = 21

  5. Compare direct and inverse variation models • Direct variation: the graph will be a diagonal line and y increases as x increases • Inverse variation: the graph will be a curve that approaches the axes and y decreases as x increases

  6. Real-life application • The area covered by a truck-load of mulch and the depth of the mulch are inversely related. A load covers and area of with a depth of 6 inches. Write a model relating the area A and the mulch depth d. Use the model to find the area covered by mulch 4 inches deep.
