  2. William Clark’s Compass • This is the compass that William Clark carried on the Expedition. • The compass is in a hinged box that can be closed to protect the compass face and is small enough to be carried in a large pocket. • He used the compass to see which way they were going and to write the direction down on a map.

  3. Camera Obscura – How It Worked • The Camera Obscura was invented a long time ago. • Light goes through a tiny hole and make an upside down image on the opposite wall of a darkened room. • The Corps used the Camera Obscura to take pictures along the way.

  4. Steelyard • A steelyard is a weight used balance two heavy weights. • Lewis & Clark the weight to figure out how much beaver skins and other things weighed.

  5. Powder Keg • In Philadelphia in May of 1803, Lewis ordered 52 lead canisters of gun powder and sealed with wax. • The cork plug is sealed with wax. • Inside the keg was gun powder that the Corps of Discovery needed on the journey. • You had to put the gun powder in the rifle first, then add the lead bullet and push it all down with a steel rod. • Then, when you pulled the trigger, a little spark would light the gun powder and the bullet would shoot out of the rifle.
