  5. Chap 3.4 – The Age of Napoleon • Born in Sicily, sent to Italy at age nine for military career. During French Rev was a 20 yr old lieutenant. • Moved his way up to general and by 1799 overthrew the Directory and created a 3 man Consulate. Then named himself First Consul and in 1802 named himself consul for life. • He was very ambitious and his military successes helped him gain power. • Who was Napoleon Bonaparte? • How does Napoleon become Emperor of France? • Standards Check pg. 129 - How did Napoleon rise to power so quickly?   6. Chap 3.4 – The Age of Napoleon 4. He won support from all class lines and created stability in time of chaos. Encouraged emigresto return, recognized peasants rights to land ownership, established economic stability for middle class. Allowed jobs to be based on talent, not class. 5. Code of laws creating equality of all citizens, religious tolerance, and abolish feudalism. Women however lost some rights as citizens. 4. Abolished the Roman Empire and cut Prussia in half creating old Poland and Grand Duchy of Warsaw. 8. 1805 tries to invade England but at Battle of Trafalgar, Admiral Horatio Nelson defeated French fleet.
