  2. Presente • Forms • There are 3 conjugations of Italian verbs: -are, -ere, & -ire. • All regular verbs follow the same pattern for conjugation. See chart below

Presente • Variations in Spelling & Pronunciation • Verbs ending in –care & -gare require an h in the tu and noi forms to maintain the hard sound of c and g -dimeticare = dimentichi, dimentichiamo -litigare = litighi, litighiamo • Verbs ending in –ciare and –giare keep the soft c and g sound throughout -cominciare = comincio, cominci, comincia • When verbs end in –iare and the i of the ending is stressed, the tu form requires an extra i. -inviare = invii • All other –iare verbs that do not have the stressed ending, retain a single i. -mangiare = mangi -studiare = studi

  4. Gli Usi The present indicative expresses: • An action taking place at the present time. -Leggo un libro. I’m reading a book. • An imminent future action -Domani pomeriggio pulisco la casa. Tomorrow afternoon I’ll clean the house. • A repeated action -Telefoniamo a casa ogni settimana. We phone home every week.

  5. Gli Usi • An action in the past and continuing in the present, conveyed by two possible patterns • Presente + da + time + expression -Studio italiano da un paio d’anni. I’ve been studying Italian for a couple of years. • È or sono + time expression + che + present tense verb -Sono due anni che studio italiano. I have been studying Italian for two years. -È un mese ormai che cerco uno zaino. I’ve been looking for a backpack for a month now.

  6. Practicare Una storia: La domenica è il giorno preferito di Michele; ecco perché… La domenica mattina Michele dorme fino a tardi. Per colazione prepara delle uova (eggs) e un caffè, poi legge il New York Times. Più tardi gioca a tennis: passa prendere le racchette dai vicini (neighbors). Michele è uno studente e non ha molti soldi! Se piove (rains), Michele sta a casa. Guarda un vecchio film alla TV, scrive una lettera, o prepara dei dolci.
