  3. Objectives • Describe actions to take in a job search. • Describe traits, skills, and actions that help you keep a job. • List actions to take to advance in your career. • Evaluate the impact of multiple roles on your life.

  4. Career Choices • Career clusters are 16 groups of occupational and career specialties • Each cluster includes several career pathways • The occupations within each career pathway require similar knowledge and skills • Occupations in each pathway range from entry-level to advanced positions

  5. The Career Clusters • The hospitality and tourism cluster includes four career pathways: • restaurants and food/beverage services • lodging • travel and tourism • recreation, amusements, and attractions

  6. Communication • Communication is the transmission of information and feelings from one person to another • Good communication skills • enable you to work well with others, including customers and coworkers • are part of interpersonal skills

  7. Verbal Communication • Verbal communication uses words and has two aspects: language and word choice • Language • Standard English is the language of business communication • Knowing an additional language is beneficial • Word choice determines the effect you have on others

  8. Nonverbal Communication • Nonverbal communication is communication without words • Nonverbal communication includes • body language (facial expression, posture, hand gestures, tone of voice) • color and design (in written and media communication)

  9. Additional Communication Skills • Communication skills include • listening and speaking • conflict resolution and negotiation • reading and writing • arithmetic and mathematics • electronic communication • These skills have both verbal and nonverbal aspects

  10. Job Search Skills • Three key job search skills are • finding job leads • completing an application • interviewing

  11. Job Leads • A job lead is information that leads you to a job opening • Common sources of job leads include • the Internet • want ads in newspapers • networking • visiting businesses

  12. Application • Complete the job application form thoroughly, neatly, and honestly • Be prepared to supply references • If requested, submit a résumé • A résumé should be accompanied by a cover letter

  13. Interview • Prepare for the interview by practicing answering commonly asked questions • Dress appropriately • Write a thank-you letter afterwards

  14. Succeeding on the Job • To be successful, you must know how to do your job and you must do it properly • Other important factors include • attitude • grooming • health • work habits • business etiquette

  15. Attitude • Attitude is the way you look at the world and how you respond to things that happen • Components of a positive attitude include • friendliness • self-motivation • initiative • cooperation • adaptability

  16. Grooming • Clothing should be clean, neat, and appropriate to the job • Shoes should be comfortable to wear and professional in appearance • Good personal hygiene is important • Hair and nails should be clean and well groomed

  17. Health • Follow these practices to stay healthy: • Get adequate sleep • Get plenty of physical activity • Eat a balanced diet • Avoid health risks, such as drug abuse • Maintain mental health

Work Habits • Good work habits include • being on time • being at work every day • calling your supervisor right away if you must miss work • completing all work in a timely way • keeping your work area neat and organized • being accurate • reporting mistakes to your supervisor right away • avoiding making personal calls from work

  19. Business Etiquette • Etiquette is proper behavior in social situations • Business etiquette is proper behavior for business situations • Practicing correct business etiquette is important for giving good customer service and for moving ahead in a career

  20. Actions for Advancement • Improve your job skills through continuing education • Develop leadership skills • Participate in a professional association • If changing jobs, do so with integrity and professional courtesy • Giving notice at least two weeks before leaving a job is acceptable

  21. Balancing Multiple Roles • A role is a set of responsibilities and expectations that go with an aspect of your life • One of life’s challenges is to balance the many roles that you have • When making a career decision, consider how your decision will affect the roles you have or plan to have
