  1. Themes and Characteristics of Ideology SS 30-1

  2. Where have we been? • We have looked at the ideas at where you get your ideology from? • We find out that it comes from all those things that are around us that we let influence our decisions.

  3. Nature or Nurture? • Some would say that we are a learned creature … that we adopt the persona that we are brought up in. • Others would say that we have the ability to change who we are and what we do … to fit the needs that we have.

  4. The Effects are … • The type of ideology that we have embraced will have a deep impact on the person that we are and the way that we are perceived in society. • Most of you know that I am a slightly left leaning (more on that later) and that really effects my interactions on a daily basis.

  5. Characteristics of Ideology • The Nature of Human Beings • People are essentially good or bad? • If we do bad things and people feel bad from those things, why do them? • What feels better … giving $20.00 to a person on the street or giving $20.00 to a friend’s brother to pull for you?

  6. Characteristics of Ideology • The Structure of Society • The structure of society reflects the values and beliefs of society. • In Economics, it is the governments responsibility to reflect how they feel towards those that are not as well off as others. • If you are on the bus, would you give up your seat to an elderly person?

  7. Characteristics of Ideology • Interpretation of History • Those events of the past will always be reflective in our present beliefs and values. • To celebrate those people that died in WW I and WW II, we have Remembrance Day … and all nations do this to recognize the sacrifices that were made on both sides.

  8. Characteristics of Ideology • Visions of the Future • As you are now thinking about June and the day you are leaving school, do you know what you are doing next year and the years to come? • Money, job, house, family; you might have to change who you are or what you believe to fit into society.

  9. Themes of Ideology • Not going to make you put this all down on paper, but understand that the themes that we are dealing with you should know like: • Nation • Class • Race • Gender • Religion

  10. Themes of Ideology • Look to page 51 of your textbook to give you a hand to understand this as you fill in the chart. • Take 5 minutes here in class to put it together and slam it into your notes so that you have it.

  11. Ideologies in Practice • Starting on page 52 with Tommy Douglas and finishing on page 56 with Ovide Mercredi, there are examples of ideologies in action. • Use the retrieval chart to help you as tomorrow, you will use your information to write a source response. You will be allowed to bring this chart in.
