  1. Do Now Please do not turn on your computer! • Find your name and have a seat • If you cannot find your name, pleasefind a folder without a name. • Begin filling out the yellow Student Information sheet located in yourfolder. • Please use a pen! If you don’t have one, ask a friend. Welcome to CGT!

  2. Mrs. Shepard • Graduated from Mississippi State University • Originally from Forest, MS • This is my 2nd year at MCTC • I love my students! • Married to Caleb Shepard who is a teacher in Clinton • Two dogs, Sampson and Macey • I enjoy reading, computers, design, and being with my family. • Not only am I a teacher, but I’m a graduate student too! Please learn to spell my name correctly! 

  3. Computer Graphics Technology Policies & Procedures Mrs. Shepard

  4. Why? • Rules, policies, and procedures are a part of our every day lives. • We learn to follow those rules or we suffer the consequences. • But for the most part, we respect what’s put before us because we are responsible, mature citizens of the community. • We want our community to be better because of us. • That’s the reason for these policies and procedures . . . to make CGT the best class in this school and Madison County the best school district in the state!

  5. Today’s Agenda • Each day, I will post a “Today’s Agenda” • This is so you will know what we will be working on today.

  6. Do Now’s • Sometimes RHS, MCHS, and VJHS students will arrive to class a few minutes before other students. • Everyday when you arrive, there will be a Do Now posted at the front of the classroom. • After you retrieve your notebook each day, proceed to your assigned seat and begin working on your Do Now. • All Do Now’s will be graded and averaged for one daily grade each week. • You will compile each days’ Do Now into one Word document weekly and will print and turn in on Fridays for a grade.

  7. Tardies • Entry into the classroom after the tardy bell is considered a tardy. • No need to come to class – head directly to office for admittance slip! • There will be NO admittance into class without proper admittance slip – unless the office has announced prior to tardy that it is excused and to admit students who are tardy (i.e. late bus, traffic jam on interstate) • 3 Unexcused Tardies = 1 Absence • You are responsible for verifying what you missed in your absence. All Do Now’s and assignments will be posted on Blackboard. If you get confused when catching up, ask me!

  8. Absences • Any absence will be recorded! • Re-admittance to the classroom after an absence requires an admit slip – even if it’s school-related! • For any absences related to CGT or FBLA/TSA– I will notify home schools as appropriate. It is imperative that you let me know if another teacher still counts you absent because you were on a school sponsored event with CGT or FBLA/TSA. • You are responsible for asking for any work/assignments given during your absence. If you fail to turn in make-up work within two days after your absence, you will receive a zero for your assignment (See Handbook).

  9. Computer Care • All classes will take part in cleaning computers, keyboards, and workstations once a month. • Every day when you leave, you are to shut down your computer, turn off your monitor, tuck in your keyboard, and push your chair under the desk. • Make sure your workstation is clean and all paper is disposed of before you leave!

  10. Expectations of Independence • Next week, we will discuss basic troubleshooting problems regarding computers and our lab. • Why isn’t my mouse working? • Why isn’t my monitor working? • Why isn’t my keyboard working? • Why won’t me keyboard tray push in? • How do I load more paper into the printer? • These are common issues with our computer workstations, and you will be responsible for fixing them as they arise.

  11. Blackboard • We will use the online course management system, Blackboard, as a supplement in our classroom. • Each student will receive a username and password. You will use Blackboard throughout the year to check for Do Now’s, assignments, and take tests. • It is imperative for you to keep up with your username and password. I will not look it up for you after it’s been given to you. Beresponsible! 

  12. Special Project Groups • Each class will be divided into “special project” groups. As a team, each group will participate in a special project for our school. • Projects will include Student of the Month posters, school newsletters, hallway décor, FBLA/TSA officers, community service committee, etc. The projects will be completed during class time and will likely occur monthly.

  13. CPAS • All 2nd year students must take the CPAS exam in March. • CPAS will cover every unit from 1st year and 2nd year combined. The exam counts as your second semester exam. • We will be doing a lot of reviewing throughout the year, and every day we will be preparing for the test. • It is very important to take the test seriously and do everything in your power to perform exceptionally well on this exam. • I promise, March will be here before we know it.Every day matters!

  14. Idea File • You will be expected to maintain an idea file in your notebook that will consist of graphical designs, advertisements, magazine clippings, etc, to use as inspiration we begin new projects. • Magazines will be provided as resources, but you are also encouraged to collect ideas outside of class. Don’t limit yourself! If you see a neat design on a business card or flyer, bring it to class! • You will be graded every 9 weeks on the upkeep and quantity of design ideas in your file. • We will begin the Idea File together next week so you will know exactly what is expected.

  15. Notebook Checks • At the end of each nine weeks, you will have a notebook check. I will check for organization and randomly choose ten papers/projects that should be located behind the correct divider in your notebook. (You can’t be organized if you don’t have everything!) • Remember, you will keep your notebook in our classroom instead of taking it home. The only instance where you should take home your notebook is prior to a test or exam.

  16. Jump Drives • 1st year students: • Part of your lab fee will go towards a jump drive. At the end of the year, we will back up all of your project files so that you can keep them.

  17. Class T-shirts • CGT II students will be designing a class t-shirt for us this year. • You will vote on your favorite shirt and we will purchase them using your lab fee. • You will be expected to wear your t-shirt on special events such as field trips, class pictures, etc.

  18. Turning In Assignments • Turn in all papers, assignments, and tests to the appropriate box located to the right of my teacher workstation. The boxes are labeled A1, A2, B1, or B2. • It is essential that you meet your deadlines. Time management will play a large role in laying out, designing, and printing your projects. If you find yourself having trouble, it is okay to ask me or your classmates for help!

  19. Retrieving graded assignments • I will pass out graded assignments/rubrics regularly. You are to place these papers in your notebook into the appropriate section. • Once reviewing your graded work, this is your opportunity to ask questions about your grade!

  20. Break • A ten minute break will be taken at 10:15AM and 2:15PM daily. • EVERYONE will go to break. • Be ready for break – no lagging behind – because it’s Mrs. Shepard’s break too! • You will hear a bell when break is over. • Return to the classroom promptly • If you are late returning from break, get an admit slip from the office – This does count for a tardy! • If we go over our allotted time for break, we could lose it!

  21. Safety Test • Over the next week, we will begin preparing for our safety test. • Each student must make a 100 on the safety test. You may take it as many times as you need, but you must score a 100!

  22. Internet Filters • As you know, Internet filters are installed on each computer throughout the school district. • We do a heavy amount of Internet searching for images, backgrounds, etc. • Be prepared– You won’t be able to access every image you find. • Be patient; don’t get frustrated, and just keep searching– There’s plenty out there.

  23. Supplies • Supply table located in the back of the room includes: • Tape, stapler, paper cutter, scissors, and pencils • I will remind you a couple times since it is the beginning of the year, but you need to be independent enough to get what you need, when you need it.

  24. Printing • Sometimes you may need to print an English essay or project for another class. • You must pay per page for each page you print that isn’t related to Computer Graphics. • Prices: • .10 per black/white page • .25-$1.00 per colored page (depending on amount of color) • If you need to print a large sign for another class, see me for a list of prices.

  25. Mac Station • This year, we will have a Macintosh laptop computer located at our “Mac Station.” • Throughout the year, you will complete a series of activities on this computer. • This is mainly to familiarize you with this type of computer so that you are comfortable using one.

  26. Restroom Breaks • You will be issued 2 restroom passes per semester. • It is your responsibility to keep up with your passes– I cannot give you more! • Each time you leave to go to the restroom, you must sign out using the Restroom Log • Break time is halfway through the class period; you may take restroom breaks at that time as well. • Do NOT ask to go to the restroom if you do not have a pass to give me!* *Unless you have a documented condition which you or your parent has discussed with me alerting me to this need.

  27. Cell Phones/Electronic Devices • Absolutely no cell phones during my class. This includes texting! • If you want to keep your phone, LEAVE IT IN YOUR POCKET OR PURSE. • Not only does this apply to phones, but includes iPods, iTouchs, or any other disruptive electronic device. • If I see it– IT’S MINE! • Minimum punishment is $25 fine or phone held for five schools days in the office. This policy will be strictly enforced in our classroom!

  28. Personal Grooming • There is to be NO personal grooming in the CGT classroom. This includes: • Combing and/or brushing hair • Braiding and/or unbraiding hair • Applying makeup • If I see any objects mentioned above, they’re mine!

  29. Workstation Chairs • Chairs are to be used properly • DO NOT roll around the room as a means of transportation! • Sit up straight when working– Do not recline! • If I see you reclining, you will automatically receive one day of break detention. • If a chair leans too far back, get another one!

  30. Work Areas • All work areas are to be kept neat and free of clutter • Keep books and papers organized and orderly on your workstation. • Keep book bags, purses, or any personal belongings under your workstation. • Before you leave class for the day, make sure: • Your computer is properly shut down • Your work area is clean • Your keyboard is pushed under your desk • Your chair is pushed under your desk

  31. Work Areas, cont. • YOU are responsible for your workstation. If anything is broken that wasn’t before, notify me immediately. • I check each workstation after you leave daily. If you vandalize or take something, you will be responsible for paying to replace or fix it.

  32. Workstations • Monitors are adjustable. Please take care of them and don’t twist them into inappropriate positions. • Sometimes the keyboard trays are difficult to move. Lift up on the base and this usually helps. If you can’t get it to move, keep trying or ask a neighbor. • Take exceptional care of the equipment and furniture– it’s all we’ve got!

  33. Food/Drink in the Classroom • There is an absolute ZERO tolerance with food, drink, or gum in the classroom! • This equipment is very expensive and we must take care of it. • After break, you may NOT bring in leftover food or drink. Finish ALL of your food/drink before break is over. This policy will be VERY STRICTLY ENFORCED!

  34. Sleeping in Class • Get plenty of rest at home; there will be absolutely no sleeping during class. • You should always have something to do in class– Therefore, there is no time to sleep. • If you don’t feel well, go to the office and call a parent. This isn’t an excuse to sleep.

  35. Insubordination • Meanings of “insubordination” • Disobedient to authority • Not following the rules • Disrupting class • Misbehaving • Doing anything you know is against classroom or school policy

  36. Consequences for Insubordination • 1st offense: Verbal Warning • 2nd offense: Break Detention and Parent Contact • 3rd offense: Office Referral Three strikes = YOU’RE OUT! These consequences will be strictly enforced!

  37. Modifications/Additions • I reserve the right to modify or add procedures or policies on this outline. • Students will be notified promptly of any changes.

  38. It’s Not All Doom & Gloom! • We are going to have a fantastic year! • I am excited to be your teacher and I want you to be just as excited! Be open to learning; be open to sharing; be open to all the opportunities that await you in Computer Graphics Technology!
