  1. Scientific Method, Contributions of Scientists, & Promotional Claims 09-10 Biology

  2. Vocabulary • Control: • Controlled Experiment: • Controlled Variable: • Hypothesis: • Inference: • Observation: • Manipulated Variable:(aka ________________) • Responding Variable: (aka _________________)

  3. Think About It… If you were buying a vehicle, what questions would you want answered BEFORE you purchase one??? • The process of purchasing a vehicle is a good example of using scientific methodology!

  4. Scientific Method • Observation: • Hypothesis: • Experiment: • Results: • Conclusion:

  5. What is the difference b/t Inferences & Observations? Inference: Observation: • Def: • Examples: • Def: • Examples:

  6. It was 6 men of Indostan To learning much inclined Who went to see the Elephant (Though all of them were blind) That each by observation Might satisfy his mind The 1st approached the Elephant, And happening to fall Against his broad and sturdy side At once began to bawl: “God bless me, but this Elephant is very like a wall!” The 2nd, feeling of the tusk, Cried “Oh! What have we here? So very round and smooth and sharp. To me tis might clear This wonder of an Elephant is very like a spear!” The 3rd approached the animal and happening to take The squirming trunk within his hands, Thus boldly up and spake: “I see,” quoth he, “the Elephant is very like a snake.” The 4th reached out an eager hand And felt about the knee. “What most this wondrous beast is like Is mighty plain,” quoth he; “Tis clear enough the Elephant is very like a tree.” The 5th, who chanced to touch the ear said “Even the blindest man can tell what this resembles most; Because of its great span, This marvel of an Elephant is very like a fan!” The 6th no sooner had begun about the beast to grope, Then seizing on the swinging tail that fell within his scope, “I see,” quoth he, “the Elephant is very like a rope.” And so these men of Indostan Disputed loud and long. Each in his own opinion Exceeding stiff and strong, Though each was partly in the right, And all were in the wrong.

  7. Answer the following questions based on the poem: • How does this poem illustrate the importance of observation in the scientific method? • What is the morale of the poem? • Explain, in your own words, what the last 2 sentences of this poem are talking about.

  8. Info from Heart Rate Lab • What is a controlled experiment? • What was the manipulated variable? • What were the responding variables? • What would we call things in an experiment that we do NOT want to change? • What was the control of this experiment?

  9. Contributions of Science to Society & Promotional Claims

  10. Name a scientist and give an example of their contribution to society. • Name a career that involves using science. • Give an example of a product you use or see advertised that makes “scientifically proven” claims.

  11. What are the promotional claims of this advertisement? • What research would you conduct to evaluate the claims of this advertisement? • What other information would you like to know about the product? • What do you think the active ingredient is?

  12. Scientists for Research • Oswald Avery • Rosalind Franklin • Robert Hooke • Robert Koch • CarolusLinneaus • Theodor Schwann • Rudolf Virchow • Ian Wilmut • Charles Darwin • Thomas Hunt Morgan • Hans Krebs • Charles Lyell • Gregor Mendel • Joseph Priestley • Jonas Salk • LazzaroSpallanzani • Anton van Leeuwenhoek • Martha Chase • Alexander Fleming • James Hutton • Louis Pasteur • Francesco Redi • Matthias Schleiden • James Watson

  13. Rubric for Scientist Poster Project • Create a poster presentation of your assigned scientist. • BE CREATIVE!!! • You will present your poster when we get to the topic that your scientist was involved with. • Be sure to answer the following questions about your scientist on your poster: • Who is the scientist? • What did they do? • When and where did they conduct their research? • Why is their research considered important? • How did their research impact society? • Include a picture of your assigned scientist! 
