  1. Where does it all begin ? Before we talk about Science Inquiry, let’s refresh: What is science? Science Inquiry

  2. Where does it all begin ? Notes: Definition of Science • Science is a system of acquiring knowledge or evidence through repeated observation and experimentation in order to discover and understand the natural world. Key Points: • Science is a ‘Way of Knowing’ • Science is tentative – meaning it can always change. • Science is based of evidence. • Science stems from curiosity. • Science is accumulated information. Science Inquiry

  3. Which came first:the question or the ……? Where does a ‘QUESTION’ come from? Science Inquiry

  4. Which came first:the question or the ……? Notes: Questions come from: • Curiosity • Observations • Ideas • Creativity Science Inquiry

  5. Creativity and Science ?!? Picasso 1881-1973 Ultimate Creativity Science Inquiry Einstein 1879-1955

  6. How is Science related to Creativity ? Creativity is a process that involves creating new ideas. Science Inquiry Einstein: came up with the ‘Theory of Relativity’ Picasso: invented ‘Cubism’

  7. How is Science related to Creativity ? Notes: Creativity is Creating NEW from OLD Science Inquiry

  8. So where do creative ideas come from ? Notes: Creative ideas come about - when observations DO NOT match current theory. Science Inquiry

  9. Back to the beginning  Where does a question come from ? Curiosity●Observations ● Ideas ● Creativity The KEY is NOT where the question comes from BUT how to develop a question. Science Inquiry

  10. No question is a STUPID question or is it ? For the purposes of Science • No questions is a STUPID questions… • BUT some are better than others! Science Inquiry

  11. Question Development Notes: An IDEAcan be developed into a QUESTION if it is TESTABLE with SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY. Scientific inquiry. • Observe and Explore • Ask a QUESTION • Select a question you can investigate • Experiment or observe to find an answer • Reflect on findings • More questions Science Inquiry

  12. Scientific Inquiry Science Inquiry

  13. Where to Begin ?!? Curiosity●Observations ● Ideas ● Creativity Notes: Tools for developing a GOOD question: • Observing and Describing • Logical Reasoning • Connecting Relationships Science Inquiry

  14. The Good, the Bad, the UGLY Notes: Good Questions  improve understanding OK Questions  give information but nothing new Bad Questions no info, nothing new UGLY Questions  misinform Science Inquiry

  15. Examples of GOOD questions for your investigations. • Is it changing with time in any way? • How did it form? • What is its relationship to others? • How does this object function? Does it have more than one function? • From what is this object made? • How does this object degrade? • From where did these things its made of come from and how did they become part of the object? Science Inquiry

  16. Science Inquiry

  17. Assessing the Questions. Types: • Analytical • Emotional • Informational • Trivial Science Inquiry

  18. Science is a Way of Knowing Art is a Way of Knowing Artistic representations of information are critical to helping communicate our scientific ideas and understanding within the scientific community. Notes: Art + Science = Communication What else can be combined with science to communicate ideas?
