  1. 100Participants! Fraser Barclay

  2. Where should this device be made available to purchase? The results show that the majority of participants believe the phone should be made as widely available as possible.

  3. Which operating system should the device run on? Android is the most favoured choice for the OS and is the most obvious choice however perhaps other options may also have to be explored.

  4. Idea 1 An idea would be to have some functions built in to the endo of every model. An advantage of this is that you wouldn't have to use module space for basics. However a disadvantage would be that these components may not be as easily upgradable. • 46% were in agreement with this statement • 32% were ‘sitting on the fence’ • 22% were not in agreement with this statement

  5. Which components should be included in the endoskeleton as standard?

  6. Should there be one standard endoskeleton or should it be customisable?

  7. Idea 2 Another idea is to have a variety of screen sizes available. An advantage is that this should attract a larger audience. A disadvantage is that the endoskeleton would have to be redesigned for these extra sizes • 73% were in agreement with this statement • 16% were ‘sitting on the fence’ • 11% were not in agreement with this statement

  8. What size of screen do you currently use/would prefer to have? The most preferred screen size is a 5 inch screen.

  9. Idea 3.1 The device could have the capability to be inserted into a tablet dock and also attach a keyboard to this phone/tablet combo so it can function as a 3-in-1 (phone, tablet, netbook). • 71% were in agreement with this statement • 18% were ‘sitting on the fence’ • 11% were not in agreement with this statement

  10. Idea 3.2 A simpler, cheaper idea would be to use a keyboard, mouse and monitor linked up via cables or wireless data transfer. • 36% prefer this idea to the previous 3.1 • 16% wouldn’t use either idea • 48% prefer 3.1 to this idea

  11. How robust does the phone need to be to suit your needs? This shows that there is a fairly high demand for a water and shock proof design. But also that if a modular phone can at least live up to ordinary phones in this respect then people would be happy.

  12. Battery life is a very important factor when buying any new technology. Which types of battery charging options should be available for the modular phone other than the normal cable option? This shows there is a strong interest in using cutting edge technology with this phone in order to increase performance and efficiency.

  13. Should the battery be able to be charged outwith the phone? An interesting idea which would allow spares to be charged whilst the phone is being used with another battery.

  14. Should there be a module which allows the phone to be powered using standard batteries? Maybe not my best idea however there was some interest shown!

  15. What type of modules would you want to be available to purchase?

  16. Do you have an ereader, read books on your phone or want to start doing so?

  17. Would you want an e-ink display option? Not sure why 62 people want an e-ink display but only 53 people want to read on the device. Is there another purpose for e-ink displays that I don’t know!?

  18. Cases • 56% have a case on their current phone • 75% would want a case on their modular phone • There is a large variety in types of cases people would want. Rugged (34%), Styled (30%) and Colour (23%) being the highest 3.

  19. There are concerns that the modular design does not make efficient use of space. If this is true it would mean that there would be less technology inside as there would be in a non-modular phone with the same dimensions. • 36% are unsure • 26% believe it is true • 38% believe it is false

  20. Would you be willing to compromise on the quantity of technology in order to have customisability?

  21. Would you like to see other companies get involved? • 90% of participants said they would. • Some chosen companies were: HTC, Samsung, Apple, Intel, Sony and Nokia, Lenovo, Nikon. • Others chosen were: Blackberry, Tactus, Corning, Cannon, HP, Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm, Microsoft, Nintendo and Archos.

  22. There would need to be an online store for people to access to purchase the device and components. Ideally this would need to be a single store so that it is easy to find what you are looking for. This would require collaboration among the companies involved. • 77% would prefer one online store as opposed to multiple online stores • 91% would want to sell their second hand parts on this store • 87% would want to buy second hand parts from this store • 81% would want to trade in their old phone on this store

  23. Would you be in favour of a community based support system with only the unsolved problems being elevated to the manufacturers support team?
