  1. The MWHS Paragraph What Are The Expectations?

  2. The Topic Sentence (or sentences) • Introduces topic for paragraph • This can be a question • This can be a statement Example: How can you tell what a successful sports franchise is? It must have a long history of success in the most competitive atmosphere, a supreme level of professionalism and of course players who possess athletic ability which leads all others in their position. The only team to do this would be: The New York Yankees.

  3. Introduce First Idea to Support Topic Sentence • Use a transition statement One example of the Yankees’ success is the number of World Series appearances and World Series Championships.

  4. Use a Specific Example (Direct Quote) to Support Your First Claim • According to MLB.COM, the Yankees have appeared in 40 World Series and won 27 of them.

  5. Explain Your first Example(You should use another transition here) • So, basically the Yankees have only lost 13 out of 40 series which is an amazing winning percentage.

  6. Introduce Second Idea to Support Topic Sentence • Not only are the Yankees successful in World Series, but they have had incredibly successful individual players as well.

  7. Use a Specific Example (Direct Quote) to Support Your Second Claim • The Yankees had the first two players to hold the Major League record for the most home runs in a single season; Babe Ruth who had 60 home runs until 1960 when Roger Maris broke the record with 61.

  8. Explain Your Second Example(You should use another transition here) • What other team can state that it was home to arguably the greatest ball player of all time- Babe Ruth? Certainly not Boston, even though they did have Babe Ruth on its roster until 1920. He was then traded to the NY Yankees and Ruth hit those home runs in a Yankee uniform!

  9. Introduce Third Idea to Support Topic Sentence • In addition to the World Series Championships, and great home run hitters the Yankees are also an example of class and dignity.

  10. Use a Specific Example (Direct Quote) to Support Your Third Claim • It is a widely known fact that the Yankees have rules about decorum and appearance. When players are traded to the Yankees, they are told how to look, yes how to shave and have their hair! The Yankees believe that appearance is everything, which is why you will never see a player with facial hair or hair that is down to his neck.

  11. Explain Your Third Example(You should use another transition here) • One example of this would be Johnny Damon. When he played on the Boston Red Sox, he had long hair that went down to his shoulders and a beard and mustache. When he came to the Yankees he went for “a shave and a hair cut” to portray the positive image of the New York Yankees.

  12. Concluding Sentence This should re-state your point and list the three points that you made • Needless to say, The New York Yankees have a long standing history of professionalism, athletic ability and success in the apex of the baseball world, the World Series which makes them one of the all time great sports franchises.

  13. Just To Re-Cap • The whole paragraph should be AT LEAST 12 sentences • You need to prove your point with three examples. • You need to use transition words and phrases.

  14. Let’s Tie it All Together! How can you tell what a successful sports franchise is? It must have a long history of success in the most competitive atmosphere, a supreme level of professionalism and of course players who possess athletic ability which leads all others in their position. The only team to do this would be: The New York Yankees. One example of the Yankees’ success is the number of World Series appearances and World Series Championships. 15. What other team can state that it was home to arguably the greatest ball player of all time- Babe Ruth? Certainly not Boston, even though they did have Babe Ruth on its roster until 1920. Ruth was sold to the NY Yankees and hit those home runs in a Yankee uniform! In addition to the World Series Championships, and great home run hitters the Yankees are also an example of class and dignity. One example of this would be Johnny Damon.
