2. Joint Techs Re-imagined • VISION • Advance the state of network engineering, research and operations • STRATEGY • Bring researchers and practitioners together, so that: • Research may illuminate some elements of practice • Operational experience may suggest fruitful lines of research

Joint Techs Re-imagined • EXECUTION • Build on the success of traditional Joint Techs meetings • Become the premier annual venue for R&E network operators and researchers to hold an open dialogue: • Build a high quality technical program with tutorials, panels, and peer-reviewed papers and posters • Expand international participation • Engage more students

4. Key Drivers for Change • Retain original meeting goals: • Exchange of ideas, • Develop best practices, and • Provide opportunity for community-led training • New technology = new community members • Opportunities for cross-pollination • Need for dialog between network operator and researcher communities • Expand existing focus to incorporate faculty / students and all technical challenges

Winter 2013: TIP • Fully merged agenda with APAN (not 2 separate co-located meetings) • Extended format • Full days Sunday & Wednesday) • Expanded speaking opportunities • Two netcast tracks • Expanded audience • APAN traditionally incorporates network operations, network & domain research, and those supporting network usage by non-technical topics (medicine, performing arts, etc. • CFP is issued; submissions due 9/14

6. After TIP2013 • No officially-scheduled Summer event • Interest in convening a smaller meeting • “focused and frugal” • Exploring options (possible locations) and topics • ESCC exploring options for its summer meeting • Feedback and questions welcome

7. After TIP2013 (cont’d) • Winter 2014: Salt Lake City • University of Utah hosting • Ideally, two concurrent tracks, expanded network & domain research participation • “Mixing bowl” approach • Student participation solicited • Expanded program committee • CFP to be issued shortly after TIP2013

8. Transition to One Annual Technical Meeting • Fall 2014: Indianapolis • Indiana University hosting • Multiple concurrent tracks • Network research / operations cross-pollination a priority • Late September/early October timeframe • CFP to be issued Summer 2013 • Submissions for papers/tutorials/workshops/posters peer-reviewed as with SC’s program

What does this mean to you? • Program committee • Continue focus on the excellence in content • Need more volunteers to address the increased scope and spread the load • Focus days (like SDN yesterday) • Feedback from the community will help structure topics and scope • Community • Increase the participating community by working with your academic researchers • Excite them to present on network and network-related issues
