  2. Lighting/Colour In the opening scenes the lighting very low key and the colours are very drained and I this think sets the tone for the entire film (dark, depressing, inevitable heart break ).I think the darkness foreshadows the darkness in the storyline in the rest of the film .

  3. Titles The opening titles were presented to us as scrawled/blood stained text and scruffy notes which tells us its a character writing them. It also probably means they will be a prominent character if there put in the very first opening scenes and because we don’t see his face we can assume this is probably the antagonist or the Villain in the films plot.

  4. Mise en scene The first shot is a mid shot of the main character (Morgan Freeman) used to establish his location/life situation etc. He’s in his kitchen which is a very ordinary setting which is typical to Thrillers because it’s an every day environment but full of things like knifes, sharp objects etc ; and is used to take the viewer out of there comfort zone by creating extraordinary events in ordinary situations. He isn’t presented to be powerful because its just a normal mid shot which tells the viewer that he is just an ordinary guy(average class, decent paid job).

  5. Costume and appearence In this opening Morgan Freeman as a detective is shown to be wearing a shirt and tie and seems to take great care in his appearance not vainly but look smart. This tells us he has a good job and maybe a good reputation to hold or responsibility to be a role model to others looking ready for his job we know its something to do with the police because of the badge and pehaps a detective because of his age which we can guess means experience.
