  1. Keeping the “T” and “E” in sTEm Light Up with Technology: LEDCircuit Application Danielly Orozco Curriculum Coordinator June 18, 2014 Keeping the “T” and “E” in sTEm

  2. Made in Florida (MIF) Lesson Plan “Light Up with Technology: LED Circuit Application” • Educational resources: MIF Lesson plans • Lesson plan: Light Up with Technology • Teacher lesson plan review • Materials & cost • Theory review & technical terms • Safety • Hands on exercise • Activity debrief • Lesson evaluation survey Keeping the “T” and “E” in sTEm

  3. Educational resources Made in Florida (MIF) Lesson Plans • MIF is part of FLATE’s • educational resources • Aligning curriculum to STEM- keeping the Technology & Engineering. • Curriculum is easy adaptable for lower or higher school levels. • Classroom materials designed to provide real world scenarios based on manufacturing companies throughout Florida. Keeping the “T” and “E” in sTEm

  4. Educational resources Made in Florida (MIF) Lesson Plans Keeping the “T” and “E” in sTEm

  5. Light Up with Technology: • Teacher lesson plan review Nature of Experience To understand & apply the theory behind basic electronics. Students are challenged to engineer and manufacture a light-emitting diode (LED) using a simple circuit. Keeping the “T” and “E” in sTEm

  6. Light Up with Technology: • Teacher lesson plan review, Cont. Keeping the “T” and “E” in sTEm

  7. Light Up with Technology: • Teacher lesson plan review, Cont. Keeping the “T” and “E” in sTEm

  8. Light Up with Technology • Materials & Cost Approximate cost per project $ 5.00 Calculations based on 24 students (2- 4 students per group) *Minimum recommended material needed it for the lesson Keeping the “T” and “E” in sTEm

  9. Light Up with Technology: Theory review & Technical terms Anodeand Cathode In electrical systems are defined by the flow of current. Polarity may be either positively or negatively charged it depends on how the device operates. Cathode (-) Cathodeis the terminal or electrode through which electrical current exits the system. Anode is the terminal or electrode in an electrical system through which electrical current enters or flows into the system. Current into Anode (+) Anode is positive in a device that consumes power or electrical current enters the system. Example: recharging battery The cathode is the negative terminal, from which current exits the device. Anode is negative in a device that provides power or electrical current leaves the system. Example: discharging battery In this case the cathode is the positive terminal Keeping the “T” and “E” in sTEm

  10. Light Up with Technology: Theory review & Technical terms Conductance Electrical conductivity is the measure of the amount of electrical current a material can carry. American wire gauge (AWG) is a measurement of diameter of a wire. Keeping the “T” and “E” in sTEm

  11. Light Up with Technology: Theory review & Technical terms • American wire gauge (AWG) is a measurement of diameter of a wire •  Solid wire: • 4 AWG (proper), #4 or No 4 • Stranded wires: • Overall AWG size, • Number of strands, • AWG size of a strand. • Example: 22 AWG 7/30 stranded: 22 AWG wire made from seven strands of 30 AWG wire. ASTM Standard B 258-02, Standard specs. for standard nominal diameters and cross-sectional areas of AWG sizes of solid round wires used as electrical conductors,  ASTM  International, 2002 Keeping the “T” and “E” in sTEm

  12. Light Up with Technology: Theory review & Technical terms Electrical conductivity is denoted by the symbol σ and has SI units of siemens per meter (S/m). Conductive thread is a fabric which can conduct electricity. Conductive threat or textiles can be made with metal strands woven into the construction of the textile. Diode is a two- terminal electronics component with asymmetric conductance; it has low (ideally zero) resistance to current in one direction Electric Circuit is a path in which electrons from a voltage or current source flow. LED ? Keeping the “T” and “E” in sTEm

  13. Light Up with Technology: Theory review & Technical terms LED a Light-Emitting Diode • Diode that glows when electricity passes through it. • Current to pass in one direction only. The cathode (-) is normally indicated by a flat side on the casing. • The anode is normally indicated by a slightly longer leg (+). • When an LED's anode lead has a voltage that is more positive than its cathode lead current flows. • The current required to power an LED is usually around 20 mA. • How LEDs work-video (+) (-) Keeping the “T” and “E” in sTEm

  14. Light Up with Technology: Theory review & Technical terms LED a light-emitting diode • Advantages • Lower energy consumption (over incandescent light sources) • Longer lifetime, • smaller size • Radiates very little heat in the form of infrared that can cause damage to sensitive objects or fabric • Disadvantages • Relatively expensive (initial price) •  LED performance largely depends on the ambient temperature of the operating environment. Applications Aviation lighting, automotive headlamps, advertising and traffic signals, video displays and camera flashes. Keeping the “T” and “E” in sTEm

  15. Light Up with Technology: • Teacher Reference Material, Cont. LED a light-emitting diode The following table shows the available colors with voltage drop LED types by Color, Brightness, and Chemistry. wikipedia.com. Retrieved on May 10, 2014. Keeping the “T” and “E” in sTEm

  16. + _ Light Up with Technology: Standardized symbols Symbol for regular light bulb • Symbol for LED Symbol for a wire Symbol for a Battery Symbol for a Closed Switch Symbol for an Open Switch Keeping the “T” and “E” in sTEm

  17. Light Up with Technology: Tools & Meters • Make sure to use the proper tool(s) for the right job! Wire stripper/cutter is a hand-held device used to strip the electrical insulation form electric wires. Needle-nose pliers also known as long-nose pliers, pinch-nose pliers or snipe-nose pliers, are both cutting and holding plier used to bend, re-position and cut wire. A multimeter or a multitester, also known Volt-Ohm meter, is an electronicmeasuring instrumentwith basic features such as the ability to measure voltage, current, and resistance Keeping the “T” and “E” in sTEm

  18. Light Up with Technology: • Hands on Exercise Design Problem Imagine that you are a technician or an engineer working with LEDnovation and your next assignment is to test different types of Light Emitting Diodes to determine the best LED to use in a hospital’s recuperation room but you do not want the lighting on the LED equipment to be too bright at night when the patient is trying to sleep.
