  7. BACKGROUND An increasing number of juveniles committing violent crimes Insufficient measures taken to tackle the problem The young perpetrators lacked empathy and insight into the consequences of their actions. Insufficient psychological rehabilitation

  8. OBJECTIVES • Support and compensation to victims • To increase the ability of the young offender to empathy for/understanding of other people´s feelings • To prevent the offender from continuing with criminal activities • To make out of court settlements if possible.

  9. Target group = Young offenders of 12 to 18 years of age. To focus on offenders who had committed serious violent crimes. Voluntarily The well-beeing of the crime- victim Neutral place

EVALUATION * Interviews * Crime statistics IMPACT * Mediation helped the victims (91%) * Only 6 % continued with criminal activities • OBSTACLES • * Some victims participated for the sake of the perpetrator • * Some perpetrators agreed to mediation in the hope of avoiding court proceedings • * Prosecutors were sceptical

  12. METHOD • To recruit volunteers who walk around in the town centre and the residential areas at night and during weekends. BACKGROUND • An increase in vandalism • Juveniles committing violent crimes • Gangs of young people creating disturbances • A lot of young people drinking alcohol “around town”.

  13. OBJECTIVES * Reduce youth crime * Reduce graffiti and vandalism * Reduce disturbances from gangs of young people * Increase the feeling of security for inhabitants. IMPACT * The number of thefts has decreased * Inhabitants feel that there are fewer problems with gangs of young people who create trouble and disturb others.
