Storms. Thunderstorms. These are very common here. They have strong winds, heavy rain, lightning, and thunder. How to tell if a storm is far away: If you hear the thunder at the same time as you see the lightning, the storm is right above you.

Thunderstorms • These are very common here. • They have strong winds, heavy rain, lightning, and thunder. • How to tell if a storm is far away: • If you hear the thunder at the same time as you see the lightning, the storm is right above you. • If you see the lightning and then hear the thunder, the storm is farther away from you.

  3. Thunderstorms • Safety Tips: • Stay away from open spaces • Don’t touch any metal • Don’t stand near a tree • Don’t get in any water

  4. Hurricanes • These are formed in tropical areas. Form from thunderstorms. • There are really strong winds and a lot of rain, sometimes thunderstorms. • There are a lot of floods with hurricanes. • In the middle of the storm is what’s called an eye. This is a pause in the storm, but the other half still has to pass through.

  5. Hurricanes • Safety Tips: • Board up the windows • If you live near the ocean, evacuate • Move to higher grounds • Keep emergency kit nearby.

  6. Tornadoes • Violent rotating cones that forms from clouds. • Many times, they touch the ground. • Extremely windy, lightning bolts, very destructive

  7. Tornadoes • Safety Tips: • Go to center of building, away from windows • Go to underground shelter • Crouch down low to the ground and cover your head

  8. Blizzards • Really heavy snow storms • Have heavy winds • Lasts at least 3 hours • Difficult to see in these types of storms

  9. Blizzards • Safety Tips: • Drink a lot of water and eat plenty of food • Stay inside • Use plenty of blankets to stay warm • Keep your body moving to stay warm
