DEFINING THE PROBLEM • DCPS faces recruiting challenges throughout the human capital value chain, from attracting top talent to placing teachers in the highest needs schools • DCPS needs to recruit, develop and retain the highest quality teachers to have a positive impact on its high proportion of high-need students • DCPS needs to recruit teachers in high-need subject areas, and with cultural sensitivity to its majority-minority student population Top Human Capital for the Nation’s Capital.

KEY THEMES: WHAT TEACHERS WANT Our plan will attract experienced teachers to DCPS by creating and publicizing a system that capitalizes on teachers’ intrinsic motivation: • Professionalism: Create a career ladder and communities of inquiry at school level to maximize impact • Community: Develop cohorts so teachers feel supported • Prestige: Recognize high quality teachers to promote excitement about change in DCPS Top Human Capital for the Nation’s Capital.

  5. A vital part of our recruiting strategy involves supporting incoming teachers’ entrance into the community through the DCPS cohort experience. THE COHORT EXPERIENCE • Recruiting Advantages • Prior to school placement, prospective hires are placed and ushered into the DCPS community. • Teacher Leaders identified from prior cohorts are used to outreach to prospective hires. DC MASTER TEACHER CORPS: IMPLEMENTATION • Recruitment: Advertise Master Teacher Corps nationally through: • Timeline: Applications due March 31, selection throughout April • Recruitment Goals: • 240 applications (including in-house applicants), • 120 interview invitations • 60 Master Teachers for 30 schools • Selection: • 1-on-1 interviews conducted by 2 Professional Development specialists • As part of the interview process, Master Teacher candidates must observe videos of lessons, then give written and spoken feedback through their interviewer Top Human Capital for the Nation’s Capital.
