  1. Media and Politics Examples of Perception and Control

  2. Quick Review: • What is Media? • Any form of communication, visual or audio, including arts, dance, print, images, video, video games, etc. • What is Propaganda? • The careful manipulation of media, designed to influence a group or population to conform to an ideal

  3. Media Determines Perception What we see portrayed in media shapes what we think about and how we perceive a issue or subject . This is why control of the media is so desirable to governments, corporations and groups. They recognize the ability of media to shape the minds and behaviours of voters, customers or followers.

  4. Example: Russia vs. Ukraine Watch the following video and think about these questions: How is this situation being portrayed (shown) in “western” media? –How is it portrayed in Russian media? How might media be used to influence the vote in Crimea? What words or statements are made by Russian leaders about this situation? What are non-Russian leaders saying?

  5. Control of Media = Control of Perception If media influences perception, then controlling media is a means of controlling public perception. This can lead to biased media (media that favours one side of an argument or group) or propaganda. What would be the benefits of controlling public perception? Who would want to have this kind of control and why?

  6. Will Turkey Ban Facebook and Youtube? In two large groups, you will read and compare articles surrounding this story: What is the message of the article? –What is being said and how is it being said? Now discuss your article with the rest of your group. Each person take a turn to say what was in the article (use the above question to guide your discussion). How do the articles differ from each other? Discuss and decide: Do you think this sort of media control is acceptable?
