  1. Agenda • Attendance • H/W check • Quiz • Review last day • New: on Nucleic acids, ATP and the Mitochondria • Add to OUR Cell • Cellular Respiration Activity

  2. What do you remember about Fats and Lipids? Or anything else we learned about yesterday.

  3. Nucleic Acids, ATP and the Mitochondria

  4. Nucleic Acids Nucleic acids are polymers of nucleotides. Examples include Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) and Ribonucleic Acid (RNA).

  5. DNA is double-stranded, with complementary base pairing.

  6. Some nucleotides also perform functions in cells. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the energy currency of cells.

  7. So where do we make this energy molecule in the cell??? THE MITOCHONDRIA!!!!

  8. Mitochondria • Mitochondria are found in plant and animal cells. • Mitochondria are bounded by a double membrane surrounding fluid-filled matrix.

  9. The inner membranes of mitochondria are cristae. The matrix contains enzymes that break down carbohydrates and the cristae house protein complexes that produce ATP.

  10. Mitochondrion structure

  11. This is how ATP is made
