  4. Verifier Capabilities • Check physical connectivity – Wiremap • Offers no performance measurements • How good is the cable? We only know if it was punched down correctly • No documentation – No memory or printed reports. • Installers must use hand-written check lists to document with a verifier

Certifier Capabilities • Very accurate performance tests to a specific set of measurement criteria • NEXT, attenuation, return loss, ELFEXT, etc... • Meets TIA/ISO requirements for measurement accuracy • Documents specific test frequency points and reports data in a format defined by TIA/ISO standards

Who Uses Verifiers & Certifiers • Verifiers – Anyone who installs cabling should be using one to verify minimum level of wiring acceptance. • Verifiers are like a Multimeter to an electrician, its foolish to guess when a cheap tester can prove connectivity. • Certifiers – Large “corporate” level jobs where consultants and system integrators are using system warranties as a way to get business and block out the small installers. • Certifiers are a means to end in many cases. If not purely used to get warranty approval, they are used as a reassurance to prevent no-charge callbacks.

A Case for Performance/ Qualification Testers • Nearly 100% of all corporate, small business, and residential networks use Ethernet as the primary means of communication on both copper and fiber runs • Test equipment for multiple protocols is very expensive, but for a single protocol it can be quite affordable • The TIA is moving to “require” additional testing in residential installations (TIA-570) • Use IEEE as a reference standard to pass/fail a link -> Test only those applications your really need 10Mb 1Gb

Before buying an expensive phone system, the end user needs to be 100% sure that VoIP or Video over IP would work.The end user has two choices:#1: Re-test with a certifier to CAT5#2: Qualify each link with an “application tester”
