  2. Outcomes for this session: • Orientation to the role of the chair • Gain insight into some aspects of becoming an effective chair • Identify skills to work collaboratively with the co-chair • Learn about the organization of the training • Learn about the pre-training tasks

  4. Transitioning to the Role of Chair • Catalyst for the process • Lead the review and keep everyone on task • Ultimately, the clarity and completeness of BOE report lies with you

  5. Transitioning to the Role of Chair • Available at all times to the other team members • Responsible for a clear and concise report • Assure that the process is fair to the institution/agency and that you review everything the unit has prepared

  6. Successful BOE Team Chairs • Have a thorough understanding of process and standards • Are conscientious in following guidelines and timelines • Ask questions when uncertain

  7. Successful BOE Team Chairs • Exercise leadership without being overbearing or inflexible • Listen to all sides, yet able to keep discussions focused • Are organized, good managers, and able to coordinate activities with institutions/agencies

  8. To Be An Effective Chair Spend time reading and attempting to understand the meaning of each of the standards and the elements within each standard

  9. To Be An Effective Chair • Be conscientious in following GaPSC/NCATE guidelines, protocols and timelines • Follow the process, as designed, to assure that we have as much reliability and validity as possible • When in doubt, ask your assigned GaPSC Education Specialist

  10. To Be An Effective Chair • See things through the eyes of the unit, and the other BOE members • Say, “Let’s go!” and lead the way • Laugh at yourself • Have a humble spirit • Be a benevolent task master • Keep the process moving and hold your team accountable for their time.

  11. To Be An Effective Chair • Ensure that the institution/agency gets a fair and thorough review • Help inexperienced BOE members through the process • Take time to listen • Be approachable • Establish culture where questions are encouraged • Reassure team members that they are doing a good job

  12. An Experienced Chair’s Advice • Organization is imperative. Be prepared and have a plan in place to complete the work in the given time period. • Be proactive! If you encounter any team member not meeting your expectations, deal with it. • Manage your time, manage your time! • Communicate with the unit head continuously, nothing should be a surprise. • Be flexible!

Organization of the Training • Preparing for training includes these pre-training activities: • Reviewing this introductory module • Meeting electronically with your co-chair and GaPSC Education Specialist to plan for the Electronic BOE Team Meeting • Reading the host IHE/Agency Institutional Report, selected Program Reports & related evidence • Leading with your co-chair a simulated, electronic BOE Team Meeting (TBD)

  17. Organization of the Training • Training is a 3-day, on-site session to include: • Simulations/Interviews • Large group presentations • Small group discussions • Cadre Meetings • Question/Answer Sessions
