  1. 2012 Expert PredictionsSharePoint 2010 Philly SharePoint User Group January 25th, 2012 Russ Basiura RJB Technical Consulting, Inc. www.RJBTech.com

  2. 2011 Wrap up Year of Proper Planning and Implementation Practices More companies moved to cloud-based SharePoint Environments (Office 365) Increased Client Side Solutions Double Digit Growth in Governance Goal of 2012 Spread Knowledge on How to Work With SharePoint

  3. Agenda • 2011 Wrap Up • Predictions • Cloud • Social Communications • Governance • SQL 2012 Denali • Next Wave of SharePoint • 3rd Party Products to Watch in 2012

  4. “The Cloud” • Office 365 will make slow, steady progress • Historically, the level of functionality SP Online has lagged in on-premise version • Lag is closing – expect next version of Office & SP to deliver same functions at the same time in the cloud or locally • Prediction: Functions begin to debut in the Office 365 cloud before making there way into on premises versions later

  5. Social Communication • SP has improved social networking but lacks maturity • Organizations will likely avoid jumping in with two feet – lack of governance-aware tools • Third party ISVs will play a crucial role in extending SP social functions and governance Prediction: Demand for users to adopt Personal Content “PCM” to aggregate & classify their own information will increase. Extremely large SP sites can start to feel anonymous, & a personal voice is needed to avoid feeling lost

  6. Governance • Double digit growth for 2011 • New users will require care, channeling, guidance and oversight • Governance is not management – it’s the answer to the questions about how and why SharePoint is managed • Prediction- Forward-thinking end customers requiring application developers to create applications that integrate prebuilt solutions to improve manageability, governance and portability, all of which can pose challenges with custom solutions. • Largest Challenge – Business Intelligence, Social Networking and Taxonomies

  7. Internet Sites Go to SharePoint • An increase will occur due to the ability of SharePoint to: • Make authoring simple with SharePoint Ribbon and Multilingual User Interface • Easy publishing with multistage disposition and workflow templates • Compelling online experience by building online communities and a powerful, interactive search • Rich web applications that develop sandboxed solutions with familiar tools including SharePoint Designer 2010 and Visual Studio 2010 • Manage unified infrastructure that takes advantage of metadata management and streamlined central administration for handling administrative tasks on a shared service across multiple farms

  8. SQL 2012 Denali • Microsoft will rollout SQL2012 in March • New Release: Improved self service report system & Power View. • Power View- logical extension to Power Pivot and Excel (If you can set up a data model in Excel, you can make it easy for users to build their own reports) • Prediction: May only be important for enterprises that already have used SP BI tools; they most likely will wait until “SharePoint 15” to take advantage of the enhancements to data and report based alerts, self-service BI and Power Pivot.

  9. Next Wave of SharePoint Organizations move to develop Second Wave Functions - Project Management Business Intelligence Workflows SharePoint practitioners will need to translate user requirements beyond IT due to more business-driven projects Success will require the ability to translate needs of CFO’s, CMOs and PMOs • More organizations will consider SP consolidation due to SP 2010 proven to handle extremely large content pools – (Terabytes) • Enterprises will look to aggregate legacy ECM platforms and divisional SP “islands” into unified applications • Users want to move away from both big iron ECM platforms with high support costs and “open” platforms with limited scalability and compliance capabilities
