  6. An inequitable distribution - Engineering Institutes • 2,00,000 jobs expected - IT industry by 2013. • A typical IT company visits only top 100-125 colleges. • Students at the top 15 % campuses are fought over by companies. • Students at 85% of campuses are provided negligible opportunities. • Primary reason? Companies have no access to other colleges or lack the funds. • Mr. Bhaskar Das, VP HR, Cognizant India has admitted, "For reasons of cost of search, we limit ourselves to 150 premier institutions across India. But extremely good talent also resides outside these institutions".

  8. Is a BA degree really sufficient ? • Every year approx. 60 lakh students enroll for a BA degree which is nearly half of the total enrolment for under graduation programs. • Majority of them are not employable. As put by KapilSibal“I do not think it is relevant to have BA degrees or BA (Hons) degrees to participate in the economic growth of the country. You need greater skills.” Suranjan Das, vice-chancellor of Calcutta University, has also said “BA graduates also need some vocational training. Economic growth without holistic education will lead to internal squabbles.” • Conclusion: A general education in the humanities needs to be combined with a • skill development courses.

  9. Young population – Boon or bane • 570 million people in India under the age of 25. • When most of the developed world is beset with the problem of ageing, we have a uniquely young population. • However, whether this is an advantage or not depends on our ability to have a productive population. • If we have a large group of young uneducated people without the ability to participate in the workforce, what we will have is a demographic disaster.

  10. Indian lags far behind in vocational and other skills as compared to other countries. • According to Youthreachindia.org, only 5% of Indian workforce in the age of 20-24 has these skills as against other countries ranging between 60 to 80 %.

  11. Poor employability of graduates – inadequate development of basic skills, lack of vocational training • Key challenge for india: enabling people to join the new workforce • Crumbling infrastructure – outdated course portfolio, machines in iti’s outdated, shortage of staff.
