  1. This presentation was split off of a presentation supplied by Mr. Hodges of City of Salem Schools.—it was included in a presentation on North American, but seemed to me to be much more useful as a stand alone presentation.

  2. Latin America” refers to Spanish and Portuguese speaking states of the Western Hemisphere. This area is also called “Latin America and the Caribbean” The landscape of Latin America ranges from the tropical rain forest, to the driest deserts in the world, to the second highest mountain range in the world.

  3. Only a narrow strip of land separates the Andes from the Pacific Ocean. This the Atacama Desert which is very dry, and supports few life forms. • Many people from Latin America live is the large cities such as Buenos Aires, Argentina; Caracas, Venezuela; Lima, Peru; and Sao Paulo, Brazil.

  4. Every major city in Latin America has large numbers of extremely poor people, small numbers of very wealthy people, and an infrastructure that is hard pressed to meet the demands of its growing population.

  5. There were probably 25 to 100 million indigenous people before Columbus. • Aztecs in central Mexico • Incas in western South America • Maya in southern Mexico • Other indigenous peoples were hunters and gatherers

  6. During the 1500’s, 1600’s and 1700’s a caste system developed in which the Europeans were the masters and the native Indians and black Africans were the slaves. • Eventually the races intermarried producing • Mestizo European-Indian parentage • Mulatto-African-European parentage developed in the Caribbean and Brazil. • Criollos-Europeans born in Latin America • These groups eventually experienced conflict with each other as well as conflicts occurred with the new immigrants. • Many Europeans came to American following WWI and WWII. Many Chinese and Japanese immigrated to Brazil.

  7. Men are expected to be macho. • Women are generally subservient to men, but women have tremendous respect. They sometimes play the dominate role in the family.

  8. Most Latin Americans value leisure more than work. Latin Americans have a different concept of time. They do not feel pressured to do things on a schedule. They are often late for meetings and put things off until the next day. They do not believe life should be run by a clock, but life is to be enjoyed.

  9. 90% of the people in Latin America are Catholic. • Before Columbus, the natives had their own gods just as the civilizations in ancient Africa, Asia, and Europe.
