  1. Thursday 9/16/2010DO NOW Answer these questions in your science notebook. What is one of the objectives of today’s class? What are the first 4 steps of the scientific method? What is the purpose of an experiment? What do you think the word ‘variable’ means?

  2. Class Checklist • No students were talking during the review of the Do Now, during teaching time (note-taking) and during closing. • Every student was on time • Ms. Chan did not ask any student to put away their electronics (cellphones/IPODS) • No curse words were used inside this room. • Every student remained in his/her seat until independent practice. • By the time Ms. Chan goes over this list, every table has 2 chairs behind it. • All students followed the class rules. (Students did not argue with Ms. Chan) • Every student brought THEIR OWN pencil and paper to class. • Every student completed ALL of the class work for the day. • No student had his/her head down during class. • EVERY student turned in the homework ON-TIME. • It took Ms. Chan no more than 10 seconds to get the entire class’s full attention (eyes forward, mouths shut).

  3. Review Do Now • What is one of the objectives of today’s class? • What are the first 4 steps of the scientific method? A: Observation, Question, Hypothesis, Experiment • What is the purpose of an experiment? A: To test your hypothesis • What do you think the word ‘variable’ means? A: Change

  4. Agenda for the day

  5. Handout • Put your name, date, period at the top. • The Assignment Title is: Questions & Variables • You will take notes off the handout today. Turn it in at the end of class.

  6. Types of Questions: • Science is based on asking and answering questions, particularly those that are testable. However, not al questions are.

  7. Below are 4 questions a person might want to know the answer to: • Who is the greatest rapper of all time? • Are sandwiches good? • Which type of sports drink contains the most sugar? • What is the address of Sayre High School?

  8. Which of the 4 questions would you be able to design a TEST for that would produce a DEFINITE answer? • Why did you pick this answer? Why can you not design a test for the other 3 questions? Make sure you address all 3 of the other questions.

  9. Experiments • Scientists conduct experiments to test a hypothesis. These experiments are controlled, meaning that there is usually only one thing that changes while everything else stays the same. In a controlled experiment, the control group is the group that stays the same. • The variable is the part of the experiment that changes. • The independent variable is what the experimenter directly changes, while the dependent variable is what happens when the independent variable is changed. The dependent variable is what is measured.

  10. Independent Practice • 2 parts. • Part 1 is MANDATORY. Part 2 is optional (it’s the lab). • For part 2, you need to read the prompt, answer questions 5-8, then come up to me and I’ll give you the tablet to drop into the cups around the room.

  11. Independent Practice Part 1 Question 1: You want to test how adding fertilizer to a plant affects how it grows. Plant A is planted with fertilizer, while Plant B is not.

  12. Question 2: • IV: Milk • DV: Your weight • Control: Your weight before the 2 weeks

  13. Question 3: • IV: Salt • DV: Temperature with the salt • Control: Temperature without the salt

  14. Question 4: • IV: the runners’ HAIR • DV: speed after he shaves his hair • Control: Speed before the hair was shaved

  15. Closing I want to test whether the color of school shirts make a difference on how students’ behave in class. I will use 5 different colors of shirts and ask students to wear one color each day of the week. • What’s the independent variable? • What’s the dependent variable? • What’s the control group? • Let’s take a class poll: Do you think this is a good experiment?

  16.
