  1. Values and the Value System The Qualities and Concerns We Demonstrate As Important… OR Why Do We Choose to Do the Things We D0?

  2. What is a Value? • A value is something freely chosen. • A value is something freely chosen from all alternatives, after thoughtful consideration of the consequences of each alternative. • A value is acted upon repeatedly so as to become a pattern of life. • A value is found to give direction and meaning to life in such a way that it enhances the growth of the total person. • A value is cherished and publicly affirmed to others.

  3. What is the Value System? • There are reasons why we choose to make the decisions we do. • Each level of the Value System explains a possible reason. • At some time, we use all levels of the Value System in our decision-making process.

  4. The Value System • LEVEL ONE: THE SPANKING LEVEL • Avoiding Punishment • “I get good grades because I don’t want to get grounded.” • LEVEL TWO: THE LOLLIPOP LEVEL • Receiving a Reward • “I wash my Dad’s car so I can use it on Saturday night.”

  5. The Value System • LEVEL THREE: THE GOOD BOY/GIRL LEVEL • Seeking Approval • “My best friend started playing volleyball, so I play volleyball too.” • LEVEL FOUR: THE PLAY BY THE RULES LEVEL • Doing Something Because It’s the Law • “I drive at the speed limit because that is the speed the law says.”

  6. The Value System • LEVEL FIVE: THE CONVICTION LEVEL • Feeling Strongly about Something • “I exercise every day because it is healthy, and it is important to me to be healthy.” • LEVEL SIX: THE LOVE LEVEL • Acting Unselfishly • “I see someone with a flat tire so I pull over and help them.”
