  1. Public Works Operations March 11, 2008

  2. Streets – Street Sweeper • Warranty repair in February resulted in about 5 weeks of downtime • Streets are Dirty • Plan developed for sweeping the worst first • 20% through the City • Future Downtime for Repairs • City’s Chief Mechanic changed vendor for better turn-around • Sweeper rental during repair

  3. Streets – Shoulders • Contracting out ditch line repair on Manassas Drive and Euclid • Staff will repair shoulders after contractor is finished.

  4. Streets – Cut Repairs • “Cold Patch” used in cold weather (< 50° F) • Soft and needs to be revisited during cold months • Hot asphalt patching when temperatures > 50° F for several days.

Buildings and Grounds - Graffiti • City owned property and easements resolved quickly • Contacted owners of unoccupied homes • City liability for potential damage • Graffiti Ordinance (Public Hearing tonight) • Requires private property owners to remove graffiti within a specified period of time • HOA’s • City provides materials for organized community cleanup

  6. Water and Sewer – Repair of Breaks • Twelve water line breaks 1-2-08 to 1-9-08 • Repairs require at least 7 crew workers on-site for coverage of all activities • Safety and efficiency • Numerous activities involved in repair • Staging the site (signage, tools, equipment, shoring) jack hammering • Closing valves to isolate the area of the break and hydrant flushing after the repair

  7. Water and Sewer – Repair of Pipeline Breaks (Con’t) • Loading and hauling to and from the site • 1 backhoe on site with operator • 2 dump trucks with 1 driver each • 1 skid loader with operator at PW yard • Delivery of parts and notifying affected residents of outage • Safety (placement of shoring box, watch for soil sloughing, traffic control, rescue, flagging)

  8. Fleet Maintenance • Turning City Vehicles around in less than 4 hours, unless major repair • Priorities • Support of snow removal operations, debris clearing • Police Cruisers
