  2. Author: George Owell • George Orwell is the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair: essayist, novelist, literary critic, advocate and fighter for political change, and man of contradictions. Blair was born on June 25, 1903, in the Bengal region of Eastern India, which was a British territory. He was the son of Richard Walmesley Blair, a civil servant, and Ida Mabel Blair. Their only son was the middle child. He moved to England withhis mother and sisters at the age of one.

  3. Theme • The theme of the story is that you should always do what's right even with peer pressure.

  4. Plot • The plot is that a police officer is treated badly by the native inhabitants and is tired of being treated so badly. One day an elephant goes on a rampage while his master was away and could not be controlled. The elephant kills a villager and he is pressured by the villagers to kill it even when he does not neccasarily need to. He feels guilty afterwards and wonders if he made the right choice.

  6. Conflict • The officer Is pressured by the villagers to kill an elephant that does not need to die.

  7. Resolution • He ends up killing the elephant with mutiple shots but questions himself whether it was right or wrong.

  8. Memorable line • “When a white man turns tyrant, it is his own freedom that destroys”

  9. Interesting • The elephant took mutiple shots to kill even with a gun of this size.

  10. Three Questions • How did the elephant escape? • How did the owner not secure him correctly? • What did the man do that caused the elephant to crush him?
