  2. Trudeau’s Childhood Very active as a child, including: • Helped found the publication “Cite Libre” • Stood up to big businesses and Quebec government during the Asbestos strike to side with exploited workers • Visited Communist China when it was isolated from western world

  3. Coming to Ottawa • Pierre arrived in Ottawa in 1965 at the age of 46 • Believed the best way to keep Canada together was to have more active politicians from Canada • Scandalized elder politicians, when he arrived in the House of Commons wearing a sports jacket, yellow scarf and sandals

  4. Becoming Prime Minister • In 1967 was appointed minister of justice • Prime Minister Lester Pearson announced his retirement in 1968, and because of his popularity in both the young and the older, was pressured into becoming the new leader of the Liberal Party • Trudeau was made leader and named the new Prime Minister, but quickly called an election asking the Canadians for a majority government

  5. The Election Throughout the whole campaign Trudeau became more and more popular, and eventually the campaign was nicknamed Trudeaumania. In the end the Canadians were tired of the short-lived minority governments and elected Trudeau as Prime Minister of the new majority government
