  2. The Problem "The people of Africa are dying of easily-preventable diseases. Does this desperate, scandalous situation prevail because the global health community does not know how to prevent these diseases? No. It's because rural communities cannot be reached on a reliable and predictable basis."

History of Riders • Started with trips to Africa • Informed insufficient motor transport is the problem • Saw non-operating vehicles piled up • Problems actually inexpensive to prevent or repair • Locals have no training in maintaining vehicles • Can be a liability more than an asset • Riders provides motorcycle training and maintenance program

  5. Quick Facts • Registered as Independent non-governmental organization in 1996 • Operating in 5 countries • The Gambia, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania • Employing 230 people in Africa • 35 people were employed in Nigeria in 2005 • Managing 1,274 vehicles • Reaching 10.8 million people

  7. What Riders does not do • Raise money for research • Fund health care • Distribute motorcycles • Own motorcycles • Provide drivers • Create health systems Riders created a way to train people and organizations to maintain and use their fleets to better distribute health care

  8. Transport Resource Management (TRM) The TRM system helps Riders manage three things: • People • Vehicles • Money

  9. International Academy of Motor Vehicle • School register at Traffic Safety Council in 2002 At the IAVM Riders trains health workers and fleet managers in: • Safe driving and riding • Basic maintenance  • Fleet management

  10. International Academy of Motor Vehicle Facility includes: Different kind of roads in Africa Training workshop Suite of classrooms (IT Training) Staff are highly experienced at training people with different experiences in vehicles

Motor Vehicle Driving and Basic Maintenance This course lasts for 20 days for beginners and 3 days for experienced/fully licensed drivers. • Properly and safely drive motor vehicles in traffic, on tarred and country roads and off-road • Carry out maintenance and safety checks • Pass the VID Motor Vehicle Road Test

Motorcycle Riding and Basic Maintenance This course lasts for 10 days for beginners and 5 days for experienced/fully licensed riders. • Properly and safely ride a motorcycle in traffic and on tarred and country roads and off-road • Carry out daily maintenance and safety checks: PLANS - Petrol, Lubricants, Adjustments, Nuts and bolts, Stop (brakes, tyres)

  13. General Fleet Management This 20 day course provides all the training a delegate needs to manage a fleet of vehicles and motorcycles Manage: Vehicle, Fuel, Parts, Stores Drive/Ride: Motorcycle, Car, Uhuru Teach others: Motorcycle, Car, Uhuru Repair/Maintain: Motorcycle, Car, Uhuru

  21. Day of Champions What is it? Motorcycle version of Formula 1 When? Annually since 1995, June 19th this year Why a race? Speaks to the culture and founding ideas of the organization How does it Admissions, auctions, celebrity racers, raise money? & memorabilia

  25. Where does the money go? For every £1 spent by Riders for Health: 86p is spent directly on life-saving work in Africa 13p is invested in raising funds to develop the work and reach more people, as well administration 1p is spent on governance

  26. Riders Today • All of Riders existing programs are self sustainable and operate at a breakeven level • Riders does however require external funds to create new and expand existing programs

  27. What Riders Hopes to Do With New Funds • Maintain an additional 1200 Bikes by the end of 2008 • Expand Programs into new countries as well as create new partnerships. Riders hopes to reach 10,000,000 more people within the next few years • Strengthen core business programs to provide a stronger platform for growth • Raise awareness of the importance of transportation in global health initiatives and create the expectation that vehicles should run for years without breaking down.
