Vocabulary Integumentary System • Albinism- caused by absence of melanin • Sebaceous glands- oil glands (produce sebum) Sebum- substance produced to lubricate skin HOMEWORK: Due next class • Check shampoo, soaps, moisturizers you have at home and find any mention of these two substances: • Write down product name and ingredients or information related to these words. • If you cannot find anything look at line and find article related to keratin and treating hair. • Epidermis outer most covering of the skin • Melanin- natural substance that gives skin and hair its color • Subcutaneous- adipose layer of skin • Shaft- hair that protrudes from skin surface • Keratin- non living protein substance • Dermis- second layer of skin • Sudoriferous gland- sweat glands • Hair follicle- tube that holds the hair root • Arrectorpili-smooth muscle swells up when cold and causes goose bumps • Matrix-nail bed • Dermatitis- inflammation of the dermis layer of the skin • Melanocytes-cells that contain pigment (melanin)
