Module Aims • To introduce a foundation knowledge of data comm. terminology and concepts; • To provide an introduction to basic communications technology; • To outline the 7-layer OSI models for network systems; • To introduce the basic concept of internetworking; • To enable students to have a basic knowledge of Internet Technology.

Module Content There are approximately 30 hours of lectures and 30 hours of labs or tutorials. • Introduction to Networking • Networking Fundamentals • Networking Media • Cable Testing and Cabling LANs and WANs • Ethernet Fundamentals • Ethernet Technologies and Ethernet Switching • TCP/IP Protocol Suite and IP Addressing • Routing Fundamentals and Subnets • TCP/IP Transport and Application Layers

  5. Assessment • Continuous Assessment 30% • Tests • Tut/Lab. Work • End of Module Exam. 70%
