Battle of Britain • First all aircraft battle in history. • Canadian pilots, aircrew and planes fought with other Commonwealth planes to defend Britain from the German Luftwaffe. • British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) was created to train men for the air war. Over 300 airports were built (including Mount Hope) across Canada and trained over 40,000 people. • Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) helped to Royal Air Force (RAF) bomb German cities at night. Thousands of Canadians were killed in these daily bombing raid, as well as thousands of German Civilians (i.e. Dresden 1945).

Battle of the Atlantic: 1940-45 • From the start of the war the German Navy used U-boats to sink hundreds of Canadian and British ship crossing the Atlantic Ocean with war supplies. • Canada built over 100 escort ships including the destroyer the HMCS Haida and Corvette class ships. • Hundreds of U-boats were sunk and the Germans lost over 30,000 men.

  5. HONG KONG: Dec. 1941 • About 5,000 Canadians were sent to defend Hong Kong located in China (held by the British). Over 300,000 Japanese troops invaded and easily captured the city. • Only 2,000 Canadians survived the harsh Prisoners of War camps run by the Japanese. • Did Canada abandoned them to a horrible fate???

Dieppe, France: Aug 19 1942 • In 1942, the Allies (Britain, U.S. USSR, and Canada) wanted to test the German Defenses in France. • 5,000 Canadian Troops were used in the raid. • It was poorly planned and within minutes the Canadians were trapped and slaughtered on the beaches of Dieppe (Including my Grandfathers Brother) • Only 2,000 came back!

  12. Invasion of North Africa, Sicily and Italy: Summer of 1943-45 • In 1943, the Allies invaded North Africa, Sicily and Italy. • 100,000 Canadian troops helped in the liberation with 25,000 causalities. • Known as the forgotten war, as the war in the South of Europe was ignored.

  13. Italy • Canadian fought in many battles in Italy such as: Monte Cassino, Ortonia, Hitler Line, and the Road to Rome

D-Day: Invasion of Normandy • June 6th,1944 • Operation Overlord • 110,000 Allied (British, Canadian and American) troops land on the beaches in 6 hours. • Five beaches code-named: Utah, Omaha (US), Sword, Gold (Brit) and Juno (Can). • 10,000 Paratroopers land on the left and right flanks after midnight and distract the Germans (Band of Bros.).

  17. Liberation of Holland: Fall 1944-Spring 45 • Canadian troops spent the rest of the war moving north-eastward liberating North-East France, Belgium and Holland • The Dutch have always been grateful for the liberation and every year give Canada 10,000 tulip bulbs for Ottawa as a thank-you.

  18. End of the War in Europe: V-E Day • Canadians celebrated the end of the war in Europe with the total surrender of Nazi Germany on May 8 1945, after Hitler committed suicide April 30th.

Victory Japan Day: September 1 1945 • The Americans created the world’s first two Atomic bombs and dropped them on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. • The Manhattan Project was the code-word for the 1 Billion dollar project which gave the world Nuclear Weapons • 170,000 people died from the bombing (mostly Civilians) • The Second World War ended for good on 1st September 1945 with the surrender of Japan
