  5. Student Retention • Yorke & Longden (2008) identified these reasons for dropping out: • disliking the location of the university; • expectations of the chosen course of study; • difficulties making friends.

  6. Managing expectations • http://www.cumbria.ac.uk/AboutUs/AboutUs.aspx

  7. Real student life

  8. Where’s the student voice? • Where does the student voice crop up in our University? • Students themselves can be the best support for one another • PLUS technology can now facilitate this.

  9. JISC recommendations • Our literature review conducted by Mary Ashworth: • Institutional systems responses: • Early access to institutional systems e.g. Blackboard (expectations of course) • Early access to one another e.g. Ning at Bradford (making friends)

  10. JISC recommendations • We have to be mindful of how diverse our student group is in terms of • Age • Background • Digital literacy

  11. JISC recommendations • Engagement of students through technology: • Twoler Project (University of Westminster) • TAG Project (UCLAN)

  12. It’s never been easier! • What are we going to do? • Using Twoler experiences of engaging students we are inviting students to share their stories • Compile a website/online area where these stories can be accessed by everyone coming to UofC • Ultimately maybe extending this so that everyone can access it (like TAG).

  13. Tools to Capture • Portable Devices • Still-shot cameras • Video cameras • Sound recording devices • Text Editors

  14. Locations of Student Content • Blackboard Community Portal page • Pebblepad • Web 2.0 tools • Campus Pack 4 • Personalised content • Sharing • Communities • Mashups

  15. Bringing It All Together

  16. Entry point - Community Tab Within Blackboard

  17. Community Tab Page - Module

  18. Community Tab - Pebblepad

  19. Examples of how easy it is • We now go over You Tube

  20. We need you.. • And we need your students to build the library of stories

  21. One day workshop • Becka Currant from University of Bradford is leading a workshop for us on the use of Ning to retain students and enhance their experience. • 27th August 10.30-3.00 Lancaster • Please book cdlt@cumbria.ac.uk
