Before your conversation with a parent/guardian, refer to the Family Communication FAS tool and consider using it as a planning tool. • Write notes on it to use it as a guide for your conversation • Address each section and the question prompts • Consider the suggestions following each section in this Power Point Family communication

  6. Greet the family • How will you welcome the parent/family? • Be sure to make them feel welcome before you start your conversation • What are one or two positive comments that would build a relationship and form a partnership? • You want parents/guardians to work with you • What information do you want to elicit from the family? • What do you want to know that is related to the child’s success in school? AFTER THE CONVERSATION • Download the Family Communication FAS tool from the FUSD BTSA web site • Name it and save it (as a Word 97-2003 document), including your name • i.e., FamCommMJones Nov 04 09 • Fill out the top section and be sure to specify the type of contact you made with the parent • Complete the document as a report of the conversation you had (it must be written in the past tense) • Save it • Email a copy to your Support Provider • Put a hard copy in your portfolio • Consider using the FAS tool again, especially when you might be having a difficult conversation with a parent. Use it to plan and report the conversation. Save it as documentation. Family communication
