Institute of Medicine Report Brief* “Evidence shows that oral health complications may be associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes…” “Tooth decay is a highly, if not entirely, preventable disease.” *Advancing Oral Health in America, April 2011 American Journal of Public Health* A new study showed that “women with insurance coverage who received preventative dental care had better birth outcomes than did those who received no treatment.” * American Journal of Public Health January 2011

WVU’s Dental Health & Pregnancy Project (Factors Contributing to Oral Health Disparities in Appalachia) Headed up by Dr. Richard Crout • Based on results from a study conducted in central West Virginia, a new research protocol was developed • Recruit a new cohort of pregnant women (500 in WV) for an intense longitudinal follow-up project (Dental Health & Pregnancy Project) • Identify early onset events influencing ECC • Genetics, microbiology, epidemiology, behavior, nutrition • Mother (and baby) will be seen for 4 in-person visits and 6 phone interviews • A simple dental screenings where plaque, gingival and saliva samples will be obtained from mother and baby • Exams are designed so that they do not cause bleeding • Short in-person interviews and longer phone interviews • Total in-person visits last about 90 minutes; phone interviews 30-45 minutes • Mother and baby will be followed for 2 years from birth

WV subject recruitment • Team mobilized and travels throughout West Virginia • If a participant cannot travel to a partner facility staff can see her at her home • Currently have 40 partner facilities from throughout the state • To-date over 100 women from WV have received their initial visit. Some of our moms have given birth and the babies have been incorporated into the study. -Babies receive a gift bag upon enrolling – items include hand knitted hats, booties, and mittens made by staff members in WV and PA in their own time.

WV subject recruitment • Primary partnerships to assist in recruitment and assessment efforts include: • The Rural Health Education Partnership • The West Virginia Perinatal Partnership • West Virginia Women, Infant and Children Program • Local partner facilities (convenience for subjects) which are also used for assessments • OB/GYN clinics • Health Departments • Head Start, local preschools and daycare facilities • Primary care clinics • Baby fairs and community health fairs • Major advertising initiatives including radio and print ads

  7. The study is still in need for approximately 500 more pregnant women from WV* Informational Brochure is provided

  8. Perinatal Oral Health Initiatives Home Visitors Project – Claude W. Benedum funding to Marshall University providing support, education and supplies to home visitors throughout WV MIHOW, Parents as Teachers, etc. WV Fluoride Varnish Program- WVU training of non-dental professionals in fluoride varnish application for children age 4 and under

Policy Changes 2011 Legislative Update 2012 Legislative Targets • Increase Medicaid Dental coverage to all pregnant women through 2 years postpartum- FAILED • Increase Medicaid Dental coverage to all pregnant women through 2 years postpartum • Study to look at Oral Health and Perinatal Population
