  2. What is a –archy? • Find the definitions to the following words and write them into your books: • Hierarchy • Monarchy • Heptarchy • What do you think the suffix –archy means?

  3. Guessing Place names • Place names can tell us a lot about the History of an area • For example New Zealand – this tells us that it is based on a place called Zealand, which is in the Netherlands. Therefore we can tell that it was discovered by the Dutch • Your turn: think of a place where the name tells you something about its History and excplain why.

  4. The 7 Kingdoms • What do you think these names might mean? • Wessex, Sussex, Essex • East Anglia • Northumbria • Kent • Mercia

  5. Mapping activity • Using the blank map of Britain, draw in the heptarchy and label each kingdom. • Remember to put your map in a frame. • Use a pencil • Give your map a title
