  1. EDG-WP8 – EDT-WP4 Federico Carminati May 29, 2002

  2. Current status • Applications are working together in the EDG WP8 coordinating their Grid activities • This is working well, and the RTAG document that is going to be released is a prove of it • The EIP (Loose Cannons) are working effectively because their activity is centrally coordinated • DataTAG WP4 people have contacted the various experiments and how have a clear vision of their need and plans • There is a concentrated effort to produce a “stable” (in the sense of “reliable”) EDG testbed version 1.2 • With a very strong contribution of all partners involved • This goes in the direction indicated by the experiments who are looking forward to “deploy realistic applications on the testbed” EDG/WP8-EDT/WP4 meeting

  3. Future plans • The EDG testbed is far from perfect but • It includes the four experiments • It is making difficult but steady process toward a sensible support infrastructure • It is a recognised entity to which non-EU and non-EDG centres want to connect to • It is a cornerstone of the Grid activities of the LHC • This is why the experiments wants it to “become” the LCG Grid testbed • I.e. LCG should take it over and make it more robust (call it production if you like) while EDG continues developing the technology and offering expert support • This offers a sensible evolution path which is supported and endorsed by the experiments EDG/WP8-EDT/WP4 meeting

  4. DataTAG role • The major problem we are facing now is how to support the extension of the EDG testbed to non EDG sites • Principally, but not only, the US • DataTAG was born with the mandate to experiment with the transatlantic link • It is therefore only natural that the EDT/WP4 personnel help to extend the EDG testbed across the Atlantic • This would add an important piece to the phase I infrastructure and would fulfil the original mandate of DataTAG • This would also respond to the expectations and requests of the experiments EDG/WP8-EDT/WP4 meeting

  5. How to go – a humble proposal • We should now leverage • The existing EDG-WP8 coordination structure • The acquired EDG-WP4 understanding of the experiment • To support the extension of the EDG testbed across the Atlantic • And realise the link between EDG/EDT and iVDGL/PPDG/GriPhyN • Via a very close coordination with EDG/WP8 • To realise this coordination (amongst other things) it has been proposed to create a LCG-level WP8 like experiment Grid activity coordination working group EDG/WP8-EDT/WP4 meeting

  6. How to go – a humble proposal • We therefore need joint meetings between EDG/WP8 and EDT/WP4 to coordinate the activities • A workplan is needed soon • We should avoid to “distribute” the supported personnel to the experiments without a close coordination • This would be a drop (even if of very “concentrated knowledge”) in a sea of “unfunded efforts” • This is the only chance to acquire a “critical mass” to make an impact, as the LCs are doing • The integration of the middleware in the experiment software will largely be done by unfunded effort • But we need a critical mass of good support EDG/WP8-EDT/WP4 meeting
