  1. Pressure Groups Sectional and Cause!

  2. Sectional: British Medical Association • The British Medical Association (BMA) is the professional association and registered trade union for doctors in the United Kingdom. • The BMA has a range of representative and scientific committees and is recognised by National Health Service employers as sole contract negotiators for doctors. • The aim for the BMA is "to promote the medical and allied sciences, and to maintain the honour and interests of the medical profession".

  3. Recent Achievements • 2010 Scottish Parliament agrees to legislation to prohibit vending machines and the point-of-sale display of tobacco products • The Department of Health launches its new tobacco control strategy, which aims to halve the number of smokers in the UK by 2020. • Methods • Doctors may feel unable to affect the underlying causes of the problems they see on a day-to-day basis. By working together through medical associations and special interest groups, doctors can be powerful and effective lobbyists in informing and influencing public health policy.

  4. Cause: Survival International • Survival International is a human rights organisation formed in 1969 that campaigns for the rights of indigenous tribal peoples and uncontested peoples, seeking to help them to determine their own future. • Their campaigns generally focus on tribal peoples' fight to keep their ancestral lands, culture and their own way of living. • Survival International seeks to promote respect for their culture and explain the contemporary relevance in preserving their way of life.

  5. Recent Achievments • 2010 was the year that saw David overcome Goliath, as the DongriaKondh put paid to plans by mining • giant Vedanta Resources to mine for bauxite on their land in the Niyamgiri Hills, Orissa. In an • extraordinary move, India’s environment minister, Jairam Ramesh, blocked Vedanta’s plan for an open • pit mine on the sacred hills of the Dongria, criticizing the company for its ‘shocking’ and ‘blatant • disregard for the rights of the tribal groups’. • Methods • Their campaigns generally focus on tribal peoples' fight to keep their ancestral lands, culture and their own way of living. • Survival refuses government funding, depending exclusively on the public for its support, in order to ensure freedom of action. All the people sent into the field belong to Survival International staff, and there is no sponsoring of volunteers or visitors of any kind. The projects which are run oversea, are carried and managed by the tribe itself.
