  1. Cranberry –For Recurrent Uti Lower Urinary Tract Infection is a common ailment which can take the form of a chronic disease with delayed or impaired prognosis. UTI is commonly treated with Fluoroquinolones like Norfloxacin or Gatifloxacin. However, the incidence of multidrug resistance is wide spread, and in recent times search for alternative and more natural treatment is ongoing. One such natural treatment method is the use of cranberry juice for maintaining the health of the urinary tract. Lower UTI is pretty frequent and occurs in 60% of women. The proximity of both the excretory opening makes re-infection very common in woman. The bacteria which infect the linings of the urinary tract cause burning sensations and difficulty while urinating. If untreated UTI can proliferate into the higher reaches of the urinary tract and also infect the kidneys and is also counted as one of the causes of renal failure. Gram Negative bacteria commonly cause UTI. E.coli is the most common causative pathogen. The pathogens in the gut regions, when transferred to the Urinary Tract become parasitic and start to devour the urinary tract linings. Antibiotic treatment is difficult because very few antibiotics can achieve a high concentration in the urinary tract. Only a few quinolones have this property. E.coli adheres to the urinary tissues of its host which it had infected. The adhesion is effected by a protein, and this adhesion is inhibited by the fructose which is present grapes, oranges, and cranberries. Cranberries act by preventing the adhesion of pathogens to the urinary tract. Cranberries have been found to reduce the virulence of E.coli by making the adhesion of the pathogen on the urinary tract difficult. It is common knowledge that proanthocyanidins, which is a constituent of cranberry Juice, may decrease the risk of UTIs. This fact has been known to scientists since the 1920s when it was seen that consuming large quantities of cranberry juice made the urine acidic and helped to prevent UTI. The property of Cranberry in preventing recurrent UTI is therefore credited to anti-adhesive properties of proanthocyanidins and fructose. These compounds inhibit the adherence of E.Coli to the urinary tissues thus preventing UTI. aor.us
