  15. FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)(www.fafsa.ed.gov) We strongly recommend submitting a FAFSA!!! (you must have a SS# to submit). Sometime BEFORE October 1st, you should obtain an FSA ID by going to https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa/filling-out/fsaid. This pin number will act as your electronic signature when you submit your on-line FAFSA application. Early submission could = early financial aid package You may submit your FAFSA (application for grants, loans, and work study) after October 1st, 2019. Be sure to use the .gov web address – fafsa.com websites are scams trying to get your money. This is a FREE application.

  16. CSS Profile • Supplemental/Additional Financial Aid Application Required by some, but not all Private Colleges • Check on individual colleges’ Financial Aid websites! • PAYING FOR COLLEGE • WITHOUT GOING BROKE: • Attend Financial Aid info night with Paula Bishop on Thursday, October 17th at 5:30pm in the library

  17. NET PRICE CALCULATORS • Available on every college’s financial aid website • Help estimate Financial Aid awards based on family income and student gpa/test score information

  18. Be On The Lookout! • Schools will email with offer to apply early (priority application) and for free! • This is legitimate and it is important your student follow the directions!! (e.g. Willamette, University of Portland, Gonzaga, etc. will send notices—don’t need essays, letters, etc. if apply by this date! DO it!)

  19. More FAQ • Make sure students enter all schools they are applying to on Naviance with correct dates. • Melinda will do the letter of rec for public colleges/universities. Teachers do not need to write letters for these schools. • Transcripts are uploaded to list of schools through Naviance once student completes “transcript request.”

  20. College App Submission DO NOT SUBMIT AN APPLICATION WITHOUT REVIEWING EACH SECTION WITH PARENT • November 1st and 15th are usually due dates for Early Decision and Early Action. Know your due dates! • Print, review and save a pdf version • Application - thorough check. Have someone proofread!

  21. Extra Tips • Email addresses - make sure appropriate • Social Media! Would you be ok with an admission’s rep viewing? Then don’t post!!! • Don’t rush - admissions officers can see poor preparation Proofread! Proofread! Proofread!

  22. Senioritis Do colleges really care about my senior grades? • Absolutely! Many colleges will not make a decision until receiving first semester grades. • Expect to see performance that indicates you are ready for college-level work. • Final transcripts sent to college of enrollment. • It is not rare for a college to withdraw an offer of admission when grades drop significantly over the course of the senior year. • REMEMBER: 2 hours a week on Applications starting now! • Where are the essays????????????????????

  23. Support To Give Your Child • Help them manage deadlines • Review their application before they hit submit • Financial aid & Scholarship research • Don’t overshare their info with others • Help them practice self-sufficiency and self-advocacy
