  6. Notes: Awkward Sentences • The word "where" normally refers to a "place where"; in this sentence, however, the location of the magazine is not important. A more accurate way to combine the clauses is to use the word "that": I read in a magazine that scientists believe they have discovered a new

  7. Example: Awkward Sentences • Awkward Sentence: What hasn’t been told it is rough to be a child raised in a big family. -->NOT an Awkward Sentence: What hasn’t been told is how rough it is to be a child raised in a big family.

  8. Now You Try….Directions: Write the “awkward sentence”. Then rewrite the sentence correctly. • The best teachers help each student become a better student both academically and emotionally. 2) High school students have a lot of pressure on them being high achievers.

  9. Correct Answers…. • The best teachers help each student to grow both academically and emotionally. • The sentence was awkward because it repeated “student” twice. Replacing it with a different word will make it less awkward.

  10. Correct Answers…. 2) Being high achievers, high school students have a lot of pressure on them. --> In the awkward sentence, we are not sure whether high school students are high achievers and therefore have lots of pressure on them--or whether they have pressure on them to be high achievers. Do you see the difference?
