  2. Date Launched • The Messenger was launched on August 3, 2004.

  3. Location of Launch Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla.

  4. Crew Members Nicole Stott, Michael Barratt, pilot Eric Boe, Commander Steve Lindsey, Alvin Drew and Steve Bowen.

  5. Purpose of the Mission MESSENGER successfully flew by Mercury on Tuesday, Sept. 29, gaining a critical gravity assist that will enable it to enter orbit about Mercury in 2011 and capturing images of 5 percent of the planet never before seen. With more than 90 percent of the planet's surface already imaged, MESSENGER's science team had drafted an ambitious observation campaign designed to tease out additional details from features uncovered during the first two flybys. But an unexpectedsignal loss prior to closest approach hampered those plans

  6. Outcome The Messenger was a good outcome. MESSENGER has successfully begun its mission to unravel the mysteries of planet Mercury.

  7. Interesting Info. To become the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury, MESSENGER must follow a path through the inner solar system, including one flyby of Earth, two flybys of Venus, and three flybys of Mercury. This impressive journey is returning the first new spacecraft data from Mercury since the Mariner 10 mission over 30 years ago. Here you can find details about that journey, the MESSENGER spacecraft, and the instrument payload.
