  1. Today’s Agenda  • Discuss moon logs • Notes on Rotation and Revolution

  2. Rotation & Revolution Study Pack #1 Page 440 

  3. Today’s Goals… • I can explain the difference between Earth’s rotation and revolution. • I can explain what Earth’s rotation and revolution causes.

  4. Rotation • Axis – the imaginary line that passes through Earth’s center and the North and South poles • Earth’s spinning on this axis is called its rotation • A point on the equator rotates at about 1,600 km/h – faster than jets!!!

  5. Rotation • Earth’s rotation on its axis causes day and night • The Earth rotates eastward so the sun appears to rise in the east and set in the west • The Earth takes 24 hours to rotate once on its axis

  6. Rotation • When the Earth faces the sun it is daylight • When the Earth faces away from the sun it is night

  7. Rotation

  8. Revolution • The movement of the Earth around the sun is called revolution • One complete revolution around the sun is called a year • Earth’s path as it revolves around the sun is called its orbit • The Earth’s orbit is in an oval shape

  9. Revolution

  10. Calendars • Why do we have leap year? • Earth’s orbit around the sun takes slightly more than 365 days – actually about 365 ¼ days! • So every fourth year we have an extra day – leap year!

  11. Exit Slip!  • Put away your books and notes and show me what you learned ! • Create a T-chart to compare rotation and revolution!
